Yeah, sorry to burst your bubble there OP, but nobody thinks that. Of all the “Derpy should be a mane character” posts you will ever see 90% are tongue-in-cheek, 9.99% are trolling and the rest are serious. Still, thanks for the best laugh I’ve had all week.

I think of them more as rural facts of life, not “vulgar” or “southern.” It’s the lack of the city mouse/country mouse contrasts that are largely kept from her. While I guess her accent is technically “southern” I don’t really think of her as being southern so much as out on the farm and in touch with the earth. (And not Amish; that’s Pinkie.) The issue is the limitations; she can be in touch with the earth insofar as she doesn’t mind having muddy hooves (Contrast with Rarity, but they’ve already done “Look Before You Sleep” and “Simple Ways.” How much depth can she have if her character is basically defined by opposing Rarity?) but not insofar as she’s able to simply accept the sights one sees on a farm. There are a lot of Amish people where I live, and I’ve heard them say some pretty shocking things – not because they intended them to be shocking, but just because such things weren’t shocking to them. Out on a farm, a guy with his arm up a cow’s vagina or anus to the shoulder is not an unusual thing. To overhear someone discussing it in a restaurant, and especially someone you can be pretty sure isn’t trying to be shocking, is shocking not because “OMG, cow vagina!” but because it is clearly a whole different way of life when deeply religious and conservative people don’t even think anything odd about it.
 
Think about it this way: if a traditional Amish family at the zoo in real life can see a couple of zebras getting ready to mate, and the husband can say in front of his wife and children with not a trace of mischief, “I do believe he’s going to fuck her,” then why can’t Applejack? (Well, we know why she can’t. But that’s the problem. That would be in her character as a farmer, and yet it can’t be.) Why is Rainbow Dash the blunt one? Because the writers can have her be blunt without worrying; there’s no way a taboo topic like munching carpet will come up for her anyway. If Applejack was routinely blunt, she might actually have to talk about something like cows fucking, or highlight the glaring contrast of she should, but can’t.

I have a hatred for people who’d think this too, the problem is these people do not exist so it is therefore moot.

There can be depth to a character without those vulgar southern stereotypes you mentioned. (Plus honestly, what depth is there in somebody wearing fan-servicey clothes, and just making vulgar remarks about farm animals? That sounds really weird to me.)
 
I feel AJ still has her positive traits, as she’s one of the more level-headed, and calm characters regardless of her stubborness, and such. Her relationship with her family (Granny, Big Mac, and AppleBloom) can be interesting to. I also like how her ways were lampshaded a bit in “Simple Ways,” and such.

Applejack is not a bad character. She’s just a character not entirely suited for a children’s cartoon. She can’t be foul-mouthed, can’t be truly violent (I mean, the pie fight with the bison was done well, but it was a pie fight), can’t wear Daisy Duke cutoffs and a shirt tied under her cleavage instead of a bra (even aside from, you know, they don’t normally wear clothes, she couldn’t wear clothes like that), can’t make completely deadpan remarks about livestock getting it on, etc. All the things that a character of her background would normally do. So what’s left is, she’s still a pretty cute filly, but she can’t have the depth of some of the others, because even the natural follow-up to that may stray into “can’t do it” territory.
 
I do hope they deal more directly with her and Apple Bloom being orphans in S5. That could give her and the show a lot more depth. “Somepony To Watch Over Me” was getting there, but not quite as there as “Flight to the Finish” was for Scootaloo. And even that was a very kid-gloves treatment of Scootaloo being handicapped.

There’s plenty of room left for exploration and character development, but make too big a change and you get flack from some fans (see Alicorn Twilight).
 
That said, I’m perfectly happy if side characters start getting episodes with the mane 6 only tangentially involved. Adventure Time does this all the time and it’s refreshing.

The show is going to need new material if we’re getting another 5 seasons.
