Never heard of that character, and a bit too late for that, especially with how much I stress that this mask is a plot point for him.

-Stops him from using magic
-Indestructible
-Can only be unlocked by an alicorn (was supposed to be removed by Celestia when he was healed and made normal again. That never happened, and never will happen.)

So yeah, I’d feel cheap getting rid of the mask without the big payoff I’ve been planning and building up for months.

Well, if you’re unsure as to wether make his lovable or hateful, why not go the Handsome Jack route? Make him a despisable little shit that you want to see dead, but at the same time, being so likeable and compelling that it makes the journey with him actually enjoyable.

Also, try designing a different mask for him, as is now, he’s reminding me too much of the Hell Mask from Splatterhouse.

Now see, that’s helpful.

On the first topic, I was saying that he acknowledged and embraced the fact that he was crazy. He knows he’s a madpony, and he doesn’t care because it’s what he loves to do. I’m sorry if it didn’t come across that way.

Secondly, this one post isn’t exactly a representation of his personality. Especially since his personality is very fragile. It’s easy for him to go from being calm and refined to savage and terrifying with the slightest tic.

Third… you make an excellent point. I’m not sure whether I want him to be liked or hated. I suppose it’s a mixture of the two. He tends to be extremely charismatic and actually does have a somewhat flawed sense of morals. On the other hand, I don’t make him a secret hero or something like that. He has no reservations for killing innocent lives for his amusement (with the rationale that death doesn’t discriminate).

And his definitely not untouchable. Let’s just say that there’s a reason I rarely put him into combat (besides the fact that I’m still learning how to draw action scenes). Of the few combat situations he’s been in, one he lost because he underestimated the guards, and the other he won simply because the guards he was dealing with there were the lowest of the low.

I suppose the biggest draw for people is finding out WHY he’s insane. I’ve left his backstory a mystery, hinting that he suffers from amnesia about certain events, and a post after this point (I think) reveals him to have a split personality, a sniveling suicidal wreck who used to be the dominant personality.

Basically, I’ve been doing my best at it, and I thank you for your advice. I’ve been working to try and make him an enigmatic, sinister gentlecolt for some time now. All I can say is he’s hell of a lot better than he used to be. My original concept was just what you were advising against: he was just crazy for crazy’s sake.

Anyway, thank you for the constructive criticism.

Well, you could start by not having him go “I’m not insane, YOU’RE the ones who are insane! Because you don’t cut up people like me and have more manageable problems!”, that alone would be a huge improvement.

And “Insane” is a bit of a catch-all term, there are many ways to be insane. From being completely disconnected from regular social cues, to shouting NIPPLE SALADS! at the top of your lungs. Instead of focusing on making your character insane, you should focus on his personality, then, you should start building on the elements that built said personality.

Also, decide whether we’re supposed to hate him or like him. If we’re supposed to like him, give him a more charismatic personality, humorous moments, or genuine excuses for his terrible behavior, and give him some semblance that there’s still some humanity behind all the crazy. If we’re supposed to hate him, then either have him fail from time to time, or give him a somewhat likeable personality, and don’t go too overboard with his villainy, as in: Make him untouchable powerful.
NEVER make a untouchable villain, unless you know damn well what you’re doing.

Yes, I am aware that he is fairly generic. Yes, I’m not that creative with my characterization.

I am doing my greatest effort to improve upon this, as this character is the first thing I’ve ever done and gotten great recognition for.

Therefore, while I appreciate the criticism, I would much prefer something that would tell me how to IMPROVE on him and make him more interesting, instead of just telling me what I already know.

I’m also interested to hear what you think is ‘insane’. Because in my opinion, everyone really is insane in some way. Granted, not quite the way my character puts it, but still. That is my philosophy in life. We are all bat shit crazy.

Oh sorry, I thought you were insane, now I just see you’re a generic psychopath who thinks he’s some great poet exposing mankind’s at it’s core while in truth being a pretentious prick with a cleaver.
