Plus it keeps their excess numbers down.
In the vast majority of societies males are always trained as warriors/soldiers. It’s the best way to channel male aggressiveness.
Thank you.
That’s certainly one of the funnier explanations.
@Background Pony #5871
My headcanon is there is no gender disparity, but you’d be shocked to find out who’s actually male.
Fair enough, and I will.
I acknowledge the ‘gender disparity’ headcanon can provide interesting ideas for a fanfic, though I have been a little miffed at the various assertions people make about it.
It’s the least complicated explanation for the disparity in group shots, with the smallest amount of problems. It’s by no means the most interesting.
If you want to go with the out-of-world explanation that the animators are just failing to keep the gender ratio even, well, then you’re ignoring the disparity and therefore don’t need an in-world explanation for it.
Still, if you want to do that, go right ahead.
And I’m not saying that the animators are doing anything particularly wrong with the background pony shots; I realize there are far more important things for them to worry about during production. Background ponies are essentially decoration, so spending time on other things would be more productive.
@Sjogre
>the birth ratios of ponies are just skewed towards female offspring
Sorry, but I honestly don’t buy that one just because the animators refuse to put more effort into their clone infested, copy pasted background pony crowds. Fair enough if you do, but I don’t see it as particularly likely myself.
the higher male ratio the younger you go
Hmn? The disparity is worse for children than adults.
I know, but this explains the higher male ratio the younger you go and the practically dominant percent of males in the canon militia
Personally, I actually think that it has some interesting story possibilities, even if it isn’t the best explanation.
The best, by the way, is the relatively boring idea that the birth ratios of ponies are just skewed towards female offspring.
all I said was that it makes more sense than most headcannons, not that it’s perfect
It does run into the problem that the gender disparity is actually worse for children than adults, though.
