They filmed it in reverse, they started with the later scenes, had Tirek get out of shape, and then filmed the earlier scenes. The same thing was done for Rocky.
Actually? Funny fact, CGI stuff is WAY more expensive than practical stuff. They’re more likely to run up the budget if they did go post-transformers Micheal Bay on this.

So how did they film the scenes at the beginning where he’s not a hulking ten-meter tall red centaur? A different actor or what?
Tirek isn’t a guy in a suit, he’s still a centaur-ish creature.
(And now I’m picturing Tirek and Twilight shooting beams of nothing at each other like LARPers, waiting for the effects to be added in post.)
