The queen loves all her children…save one: her successor. For to a queen, any other queen, whether kin or not, means one thing: competition.
Lest the mother kills the child, the new queen is therefore removed from the mother hive as quickly as possible. A small escort of workers is given to her, to nurture and care for her until she is fit to rule and expand the new hive.
Most queens never meet their parent, which - given their naturally aggressive territorial behavior - is a good thing. The pheromone mix alone - familiar, yet different - is enough to make most queens fly into a minor frenzy.
