yeah you have a point, but i still hated how NERDY was SA in THAT comic, maybe they could have make him something like a though guy outside and have a secret nerd side, anyways i dont consider the comics canon at all, before someone try to attack me, the writers said the comics canon is undefined, it can be canon if you want and vice versa….its my opinion i dont want to begin a drama thread…

I tend to prefer his nerd background idea, largely because he apparently played the paladin class. He could have grown up idolizing fantasy knights who defended truth and justice and that’s what made him decide to become a guard, so he could do the same.
 
Besides, even in real life we see soldiers and sports stars who are nerdy (bronies, otaku, gamers, etc). Not much of a stretch to think Shining could be.
