You haven’t watched Inspiration Manifestation? Season 4, episode 23, watch it or if you have then watch it again and you should get it.
“The way they ended it, with someone else getting stuck with all the work and Spike joking about it was a terrible lesson to end on.”
The jackass cynic in me kind of wants to snark about that actually being a depressing truthful life lesson.
First world problems.
Bitchin bout all the free gold they’re gettin because they have to carry it themselves…
Way to keep up those stereotypes ladies.
Or maybe they’re just pissed, because they got the short straws in the cleaning draw. Using magic to turn trees back looks incredibly more easy then removing gold piece by fragile piece.
Perhaps, I guess it was just assumed that since Luna seemed to be having a good time, she must not be working. (because lets face it, cleaning up a mess and having a good time are usually mutually exclusive)
I think she’s turning the trees back to normal. It’s just not well pictured.
Evidently, so is Celestia.
I get the feeling that the final episode will do away with Celestia.
Excuse me, rebuttle.
Rebutle? Is that when a butler screws up and has to re-do something?
I’m just disappointed that the writing staff so often misses the mark badly when it comes to the moral lessons that are supposedly part of each episode.
I can agree, and we can end it there because frankly I’ve got things to do and don’t have the time to continue a rebutle. Also, hurray for this being a completely reasonable conversation devoid of “yelling” and insults.
Do you mean this one? @Techy Pony
I don’t know…it seems like an experienced magic user should be a little more responsible about trying new, unknown magic. It’s like a car driver hopping into a vehicle they’ve never driven and not checking the tires. You might not have made the tires bald…but you’re absolutely responsible if you cause an accident because you didn’t check.
As for your more recent question;
>Say they were held liable, what would you do?
I haven’t given it much thought…my complaint had more to do with the crappy message the writers sent to the target audience. But since you ask it sounds like an amusing, albeit purely hypothetical exercise. There’s no time for a complex exploration of the Equestrian justice system in a 22 minute cartoon for little girls.
In Rarity & Spike’s case; any assumptions that only a Princess could clean up the mess are pure conjecture. Maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t. Setting that aside, they should have been visibly out there fixing the damage they caused. Beyond that, restitution, either financial or services for any citizen who suffered loss by their negligent actions.
Fluttershy’s case; that’s harder. She can’t fix the town all by herself, and paying restitution would have her in debt for the rest of her life. I suppose a prescribed amount of community service…but the town is still going tho have to absorb most of the re-building work & expense.
None of that was ever my point though. I’m just disappointed that the writing staff so often misses the mark badly when it comes to the moral lessons that are supposedly part of each episode.
Since I was merely clarifying there, you’d have to read my original statements in context. (given how much I wrote I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t)
However looking up the actual definition of negligence as well as the criminal definition, I’m pretty sure none of the cases in the show count as criminal negligence. In such cases essentially no one is held legally liable and is essentially considered an accident. Any damages would be payed for by taxes and or insurance (essentially the community helping fix the problem (through money rather than direct help) as has been seen on the show)
Say they were held liable, what would you do? Sue them for the cost to rebuild the town? Didn’t cost a penny unless you count an hourly wage for the princesses. Say it did cost money, it’s likely be more than any ordinary person could ever afford, due you take their money for life making them poor for life and still do little to help the actual costs? If you did that’d be useless and could be argued as unjustifiable and torture. Do you put them in jail for life? Solves no problems, takes someone away that can help the economy and then pay for their living in jail costing more money…yeah because that helps.
Long story short, what legal actions would you have them do? Frankly, it seems that educating them and then giving them some community service time to stew on what they’ve learned sounds like the only reasonable option. (one that’s never actually utilized)
>you can’t put someone away because they’re stupid and in the future are likely to screw up
Nobody is saying that at all, I don’t know where you’re getting that idea.
In both of the episodes we’re considering the negligence did happen, damage was inflicted on the town. There’s nothing hypothetical about it. Nobody is being sanctioned for a ‘future crime’.
Sure you can; it’s called criminal negligence and there are thousands of people in jail for it.
I meant what I said more literally, as in you can’t put someone away because they’re stupid and in the future are likely to screw up, as for them having screwed up due to their negligence, that’s a different story. I’m not here to debate what laws should be, but the fact someone can be put in jail for not knowing better is baffling to me, because it will fix nothing in any way shape or form. The only reason for such a thing would be petty revenge.
Do you suggest that they not be tossed in prison due to the fact that’d be terrible for the show, or due to the fact that they were very subtly negligent and to put them in prison for such a thing (which would happen on this planet) would be absurd? I personally wouldn’t mind seeing them be culpable or showing that they learned something and know they screwed up over the writers completely ignoring the fact.
As far as Rarity and Spike not helping, as far as we know there was literally no way for them to help (sure in JJ’s pic they’re shown just picking up the gold, but being dark magic it’s possible it’s nowhere near that easy or even possible for “regulars”). In that case the alicorns are stuck with it whether they like it or not. To be fair though, the book is for friendship reports, not any and all lessons learned.
When the town was screwed up from either spike or the ursa, the whole town helped fix it up, I guess they figured, “we live in a word of magic and “mythical” creatures, shits gonna happen, gotta do our part to fix it”.
For the old audience members though, I think you could take the last few seconds of the episode (Twilight glaring at spike even after his remark) as sort of Twilight thinking “This is your fault you little brat and you know it, so why am I stuck cleaning your mess?!” Another lesson of the episode being life’s not fair, you’re always going to be fixing other people’s problems. (think tax dollars…)
>you can’t put someone in jail for being ignorant or unintelligent, even if they’re bound to make a mistake because of it
Sure you can; it’s called criminal negligence and there are thousands of people in jail for it. Since Fluttershy is supposedly an animal expert she’s absolutely culpable for doing something stupid and animal related.
But I’m not suggesting the writers end an episode with a main character being tossed in prison. Instead of the nonsensical Pinkie Pie ending they gave the episode, they might have ended it with Fluttershy explaining what she’d learned to the Princess.
“Just because an animal looks cute and cuddly doesn’t mean it’s meant to be a pet. Some animals can be downright dangerous…and if you don’t know what you’re dealing with you shouldn’t take the risk, or else you or other ponies could be hurt by your negligence.”
It works better if you read it in FS’s voice.
>You’re a unicorn and you read a spell book…things get terribly out of hand and you’re in jail for half your life. Now that doesn’t sound quite right does it?
Again, I never suggested a main character be sent to prison for the next 50 seasons…but the episode could have wrapped with Rarity & Spike doing something like JohnJoseco’s picture above. They could have the same feelsy ‘we’re still friends’ ending, while showing that acting irresponsibly, even if you didn’t mean to, will lead to consequences later.
The way they ended it, with someone else getting stuck with all the work and Spike joking about it was a terrible lesson to end on.
