@Jarkes
I considered asking what the fanfic was, but I was afraid you’d lost track of it. Thanks for the link.
I can’t say it’s changed my mind, at least not entirely, about Spitfire; it feels to me like the author’s still letting her off a little too easily. The real test, admittedly, will come when I re-watch the episode; now that this story’s in my brain, it could end up affecting how I view her actions. Regardless of my own feelings, it’s a decent exploration of her actions, and I’m grateful the author wrote it.
Eh, it happens to everyone; sometimes the desire to win a competition will affect your judgment. There was one fanfic that dealt with how Spitfire felt after the event, showing that even as she was doing it, she had felt guilty about it, which seemed pretty in-character for her.
@Red Yellow Moon
I am rather curious if Equestria has any sort of naming system, or if once a foal is born, the parents just follow their intuition.. Or just magically spit out a name on the spot.
Incidentally, this doesn’t require all that much adjustment to my headcanon that Firefly is Rainbow Dash’s mom (and it does nothing to my additional headcanon that Surprise from G1 is Rainbow Dash’s older sister and the youngest Wonderbolt in history).
Simply put, she was named after the original Firefly.
I wonder if anyone has discussed before if pony names are ever reused names, like if canonicaly hundreds of years ago there was a historically well known Firefly who helped form the Wonderbolts.
Have there ever been any other ponies, Pegasus or otherwise, to be named Firefly?
Or once a pony is named, no other ponies are ever given that name ever again?
@IceKitsune
They own the rights to a lot of them, but do nothing with them because they don’t want to confuse people with two radically differently designs.
Also doesn’t Hasbro not own the rights to the G1 Ponies except for Applejack? (or did that not count names) So it might be covering their asses for legal reasons as well.

All right. Here’s the fanfic in question anyway, just in case you’re interested:

I have strong doubts that any argument or explanation will cause me to revise my opinion of Spitfire’s actions in that episode…

Yeah, somewhere down the line, the organization got really cut-throat.
They need to check with the Naming Bureau pony, Trade Mark.

If no two (or more) ponies are ever given the same name, then I’m surprised that it’s even possible to name ponies at all.

Agreed.

no, they can use what ever name they want even if they dont have “the rights”
they just cant sell stuff with that name.
that is why alot of characters from the show get name changes on the toys.

It might have been that originally, but changed the reason to Faust’s DA name since they really don’t want to make any overt G1 references.
Yeah that’s the first thing I thought about as well.
This.
