It was pretty much split 60/40, more in favour of a war than not, though the really important split is that the warhounds all had different targets they were braying for. Naturally, the result of trying to please everybody led Hitler into bumbling into a war on all 4 fronts. There were two anti-capitalistic camps, one who wished to target America with propaganda (as the nazis lurved certain types of industrialism such as Ford’s, and attributed the ‘good’ industrialism to then-American sensibilities), and one which wished to target Britain with anything that exploded including exploding propaganda. Assaulting Britain and France actually already entailed a two-front war as they felt dismantling their colonialist holdings in Africa would damage them far more than a simple blockade, also possibly because they were jelly that they couldn’t shot into the colonialism game themselves, most German colonial properties lost heavily.
Then there were the groups that feared communism, divided on whether to push straight to Moscow and kill it at its source, or to contain it and nationalise the countries around it. Guess which group won that one after the pact? (amusingly appeasing that group likely cost them everything, as Stalin had no plans to go after Germany, feeling the pact meant he no longer needed to worry about an attack from the western front, and that marxism and nazism had few overall differences. Someone else didn’t do much studying either it seems!) And there were also those old fogey descended-from-aristocrats groups like the Wredes, Richtofens, Bismarcks (and my own :D) who wanted to return to the old ways after the ‘national crisis’ was over, and move towards a fascist-trimmings constitutional monarchy over full-blown national socialism. Sadly, we’ll never figure out who would have won that fight, not until the traitorous democrats are expelled from Germany and more sensible forms of governance reinstated. Then we can get down to figuring out whether the Whites or the Brownshirts have the right of way for human advancement!
More like it was inevitable because of multiple factors, including how the allies chose to resolve the ceasefire, and how public distaste of the Weimar was slowly leading to support of a military-sponsored coup, with propaganda based upon being ‘stabbed in the back’ by capitalists and government sycophants fueling the fire. If Ludendorff had never found Hitler, there’s a pretty good chance he would have just Junta’d the fuck out of the country, elections be damned. Hitler wasn’t unique in the least, he just happened to be the one the military elite saw favour in then threw in front of a podium. To avert nazi germany (or a similar military dictatorship with less artsy-fartsy but more random killings ala greece) you’d need to kill roughly 700 military officers, four media moguls and their entire newspaper staff, seventeen oilmen, six film producers, eleven directors, pretty much the entire Green Party, Stephen Wise, Il Duce, and a chicken farmer at the least.
Once the groundwork was laid a hundred fifty years prior, nationalism was inevitable. Once the allies mocked them with a disastrous treaty, as a result of the economy, National Socialism was inevitable. Once the Anglosphere jews, especially the Americans, decided there was such a thing as a tolerable amount of antisemitism, and the more eastward the more acceptable, the rest was inevitable. It’s basically one big long string of unavoidable outcomes since the mid-1800s war treaties between the European nations and how each country responded to the dark spectre of capitalism. (note that that last one is written by a pro-capitalist, takes awhile to get to the environmental aspect, but damned if it doesn’t do its research, though presented in a flawed way.)
Also, genocide would have prevented tumblr. I think that’s more of a ‘pro’ than necessary
Yeah yeah, someone else would’ve replaced Hitler. The thing is, were any of them as charismatic as Hitler? Did any of them want a war as much as Hitler?
And an economy built around the military-industrial complex is unsustainable and you should feel ashamed for suggesting that it is.

Not virtues of those ideas and events, but the war reinvigorated the economy of several countries that had crashed because of WW1 (USA, Germany, etc). However, I think NK’s point was that just killing Hitler doesn’t stop the overall problems that existed and, near the end of the war, he was a destructive element against his own cause.
Please, enlighten me as to the virtues of fascism and genocide.

I can’t help but feel like awful things, like, say, the Nazis rising to power, being universal constants is just sour grapes on the author’s part.
“What’s that? You want to go back in time and prevent millions from dying needlessly? Well congratulations, you (pick one: changed nothing/just made things worse)! We had to suffer through Hitler, and you have to too!”
Maybe it’s one of those universal constants that serve a higher purpose somewhere way down the line.
