No, it’s canon. And the tau have started to catch on, in recent novels.
I live for the details of the story and universe presented in media, and I dig really far. The actual canon is that the same sort of creatures who gave the Necrons their bodies are the Ethereals, just with slightly different goals. They still want to wipe out independent life from the universe because all their power keeps getting funneled into the warp so long as there is chaos in life, and there undeniably is, in this setting and out. The C’Tan wanted to wipe out life entirely to solve the problem, but the Necrons have recently thrown them to the curb. The Ethereals want to perfectly unify all life, so there’s no more chaos, only perfect order. Both options result in no more power going to the Chaos Gods, and also keep the Star Gods (such as the Emperor of Man) from receiving their empowering worship that makes them so much more power than the others.
I mean, the Emperor has been more or less dead for millenia untold and is still fighting the Chaos Gods of the Warp to keep humanity as safe as possible.

There is no proof of mind control by Ethereals, merely Emperium propaganda.
Personally, since I see Tau and Equestrians being the most alike, I could seem them being strong allies. I have actually put together a series of Tau quotes and with some small edits have it work well for something ponies could say.
@Red Miles
Only if the Ponies accepted what is effectively race-wide mind rape by the Ethereals, who are the same of the things that guide the Necrons. But don’t tell them that, or the conditioning in them will make them shoot you and forget what you said.
I’d think the ponies and Tau would probably be able to get along with each other. Though I never really got too deep into their lore so I might be missing something.

I think Equestria could muster the means to break the conditioning on a wide scale and then muster voluntary cooperation.

{Usually it’s imperials and chaos.}
