A comment I found sums up my feelings on this:

“Personally, I seem to have a high OoC tolerance, because most cases I encounter just make me think, “Uh-huh, so there are circumstances in which this character can act like this!” Maybe because if anything, it often makes the character look more diverse and lowers the acquired degree of predictability. Then again, it’s always best when the OoC catalyst in question proves to be sufficiently strong and uncommon experience for the character.”

It was terrible because they were all bafflingly out of character by being cruel to Pinkie and ruining her one chance at the national stardom all of them already had; adding AJ to the nastiness wouldn’t have made it any better.
