Basically, she’s the Captain Picard of the show. It’s completely possible to make many episodes that defocus off her, but we need one character to be the person we call back to and in this case the voice of leadership.

Even during Season 2, Twilight Sparkle had more airtime than any other character. Of course, she has been the most prominent character of an ensemble, not the main character with a cast of supporting characters; I don’t think that’ll change during s4, but we’ll find out in a few months.
That is complete nonsense. In the vast majority of episodes, Twilight’s role was no more pivotal than any of the others.
You say that like it wasn’t the case to begin with. Twilight’s always been the primary protagonist of the show. Even in an ensemble cast, there’s always a lead character. MA**SH** has Hawkeye, Lord of the Rings has Frodo, so on and so forth.
Don’t complain about a loss of balance where there was none to begin with.
Well, the show staff has said that Derpy will be in the background again in season 4; that doesn’t rule out the possibility of a new, Derpy-less intro, obviously, but I don’t think we need to worry about her being removed from the show for now.
I’m betting that Season 4 will have a completely redone opening to show off the Twilicorn (and possibly to remove Derpy as per Hasbro’s alleged orders).
The video is a joke (it was out shortly after the official alicorn Twilight reveal). The joke is that her wings are taped on, even onto the photo sent to Celestia, completely blocking out AJ’s photo.
