Indeed, especially because she seems rather similar to Twilight Sparkle in many regards. Hell, her NAME is composed of synonyms for “twilight” and “sparkle”. Her colour scheme is almost a reversal of Twilight’s colour scheme.  
So she could’ve kinda been a Anti-Twilight or something like that, but no. They just had to make “the bully”.  
That’s such a big missed chance, it ceases to be funny.

Because Luna had the backstory of being someone kindly who fell from from grace and was corrupted by a lust for power. After her evil was stripped away, her good nature prevailed.
 
But all we had for Sunset’s personality was “bitch”. Nothing more.

Perhaps that will be what the Equestria Girls show is about. Sunset Shimmer earning back the trust of canterlot high and in turn learning the magic of friendship. I’d watch that.

The Lich was just an evil nuke monster or something - not really a character. Barely had any dialogue, no development, no real presence or appearance aside from the couple episodes specifically involving stopping him (plus the background foreshadowing appearances he made throughout), etc. - he was simply a creature of pure evil with no motive other than death and destruction. However, Ice King/Simon is an exact case to the contrary, being a ‘villain’ with infinite-level sap to his backstory, but I think that was done well and I super love it.

I’m not sure that should matter. the elements should be able to purge darkness from someone whether that darkness was internal or not. Besides, if the yin yang symbol on her cutie mark means anything, it’s that she can be just as good as she can be evil.

a lot of animations seem to have this issue now  
but then there are shows like korra (amon) and adventure time (the lich) that have great villains without having some sap that makes the character no longer worth while

very true but luna was nightmare moon the whole time, shimmer was shimmer the whole time, no corruption from jealousy, just wanted power

this is where the character is no longer compelling or interesting  
this one scene undermines everything the movie was developing to this point

I don’t get why when Sunset got blasted with the elements, everyone thought her feeling sorry was bullshit but when the same thing happened with Luna in the very first story arc, everyone’s ok with it.
