Funny, I haven’t seen much Mom!Derpy stuff that portrays her as pitiful. Nearly all of it I’ve seen portrays her as a loving and competent (if slightly eccentric) mother. I really don’t see very much “Misery Olympics”, as you put it.

Gamer!Luna and Mailmare Derpy don’t really equate though, since one is a creator-specific fanon (no one tries to map it onto anything other than the Molestiaverse) and Derpy has at least been established as delivering things.
 
I’m hard-pressed to think of why exactly I find Derp/Dink so annoying; probably it’s some combination of the whole “oh gawd it’s because they have similar coloration, isn’t it?” thing (only people with really lousy color sense would think their coloration is anything like similar) and the way it gets presented as if it were as obvious a thing as LyraBon– despite their total lack of screen sharing– and treated like it has some kind of canon weight beyond “fandom lark”. It wouldn’t even rate as annoying if it weren’t so prevalent and vigorously-defended, the way one bug on the windshield isn’t worth stopping at a gas station to clean off, but a whole cloud of bugs is irritating. It also smacks of piling on the trauma; Derpy’s behind the 8ball already in even loving portrayals, she doesn’t need to get entered into extra events in the Misery Olympics by being a slow, clumsy, walleyed, perpetually disoriented single mother, too. It’s like… Orphan!Scootaloo is a generally accepted thing and not necessarily cruel, because (like AB) she’s obviously a happy and more or less well-adjusted kid in spite of it, but drawing her weeping in the rain next to some garbage bags in the alley where she lives is just Scootabuse and gross.

I suppose it’s true that the other popular fanons I listed have less potential for stepping on toes than the Derpy/Dinky relationship; it’s just that the only reason I’ve ever seen anyone give for objecting to it is “it’s not canon”, full stop. And I could tell that you don’t personally object to it, but since you replied to me I felt it would be rude to ignore you. (Plus, I figured you’ve learned a lot about the fandom in your time here.)

Also I don’t have anything against the thing. It’s silly, but no more than, say, Molestia or something. There’s a lot of really great art based on Derpy as a mother, and that’s usually enough for me.

That’s about it, really. The most popular ships are also the ones with the most detractors, because it infringes upon their ship of choice, because they don’t like the character, because it reminds them of a bad fic they read, whatever. Popularity doesn’t just make it a bigger target, it gives it a larger pool of people that can be annoyed by it, and more opportunities (and subjective need) to speak out against it.
 
Maybe some people like to see Derpy as a young, care free character, maybe some want to see Dinky in another family, whatever. The fact that Derpy/Dinky is practically everywhere gives them more chances to be annoyed and more chances to say something about it.

It’s not terribly widespread, and it’s less common than it used to be, but I’ve seen several others mock and/or attack Derpy/Dinky pics here.
 
Keep in mind that Derpy appeared fully grown in Twilight Sparkle’s flashback in “The Cutie Mark Chronicles”… yet also was a contestant in the Best Young Fliers competition in “Sonic Rainboom”. (And appeared as a filly in “The Cutie Pox”.) I don’t think arguing about Derpy’s age is going to get anyone anywhere. Also, since “Luna Eclipsed” Dinky has been pretty consistently shown with Carrot Top (Golden Harvest), leading some people to claim that she’s probably Dinky’s mother, though they don’t seem to worry about whether Carrot Top is old enough to be Amethyst Star’s mother as well.

Yes, it’s true that there’s no evidence in the show of any relationship between Derpy and Dinky, there’s evidence (though not conclusive) that there is no relationship, and the reason the fanon started in the first place (coat/mane color similarity) is stereotypically silly of the brony fandom. But there’s other fanons of which we can say all those things, yet no one objects to it.
 
For example, until “Hearts and Hooves Day” the only evidence for Lyrabon was the “ponies standing next to each other” type, yet the only people who objected to that fanon were the ones who objected to all lesbian pairings. Gamer Luna has absolutely no basis in canon, yet it’s one of the most popular fanons around, with only one BP making one complaint about it that I’ve seen. (And Gamer Luna started well before there was any reason to believe video games existed in Equestria, whereas the Derpy/Dinky fanon started during s1 when it at least didn’t contradict canon.) As far as I can tell, no one objects to the fanon of Derpy rooming with Carrot Top, or of her being a mailpony.
 
So I’m just trying to understand, why do some bronies feel compelled to object to the Derpy/Dinky fanon? I can understand arguing against those who think the relationship is (or is likely) canon, but why argue against it in comments on images that make no claim to canonicity? Why this fanon, while equally-implausible fanons have no similar critics?
 
I bear no ill will towards people who don’t like the pairing, and in fact I’m sorry that they’re bothered by what I consider a charming relationship, but I just want to understand the reasons why some people seem to object to it more strongly than usual.

Problem is we’ve seen Dinky with other adult ponies somewhat consistently (Carrot Top and WRitten Script, primarily) than we’ve ever seen Dinky and Derpy together (which is never). For what would be a mother/daughter relationship, that would be very odd.
 
It’s the most popular fanon there is and also one with the least evidence of them all. Trixie liking pinecones has more basis in canon as she’s actually been seen in the same scene as pine trees.
 
It makes for nice art and all that, but arguing that it’s anything but the least sustainable fanon in the fandom is impossible.

i mean, for all we know, caramel and big mac are a couple and we would never know as it’s just never seen (just a random example i know many of you would say ‘meh’ to)
 
likewise, maybe fluttershy had 17 siblings, but just because something is not shown or said, does not mean it does not exist.
 
and for BG ponies, really, you can make up whatever you want, as aside from a few scripted scenes, all they do is ‘exist’ and you can make a 15 mare relationship if you want to

We saw dinky and sparkler together at a SISTERhooves social, naturally. we’ve seen dinky at school, we’ve seen many foals at school that have no exact parents shown or seen on the show, doe sthat make them orphans? no, just makes them BG ponies, and if you wanna do something with them, go ahead

Dinky is Amethyst Star’s sister. They’re one of the teams at the Sisterhooves Social. You could maybe make a case for Derps heatin’ the sheets with an older dude who already had an adult kid… if, y’know, she and Dinky had ever appeared onscreen at the same time.
