While the pony community is under matriarchal rule the male ponies don’t seem to be under any sort of oppression. They seem to have equal opportunity just like anyone else. I was under the impression that Equestria was enlightened enough to where they’re leaders could be female and no one makes a big deal of it.
I think @Whatevs hit the nail on the head: it’s less about male/female roles and more about Blueblood, a rich prince, making a hardworking craftspony pay for their food.
Seriously, though, it’s strange that Rarity expects something like chivalry, when it is obvious that Equestria is heavily controlled by females, if not downright female-centric (which I would love). One would think that it would be reasonable to expect Rarity to afford the date in this matriarchal world.

But mostly I find this observation funny because all though it makes sense in principle, in reality it’s just a prince making his commoner guest buy stuff for him that he can easily afford.
