My submission for kindheart525 ’s Thirdverse Contest! I wrote an accompanying piece for it, but my skills are a tad rusty.

Big Macintosh perched on the highest hill on Sweet Apple Acres, overlooking the main barn and the golden delicious fields. The evening sun dipped below the horizon; orange sherbet clouds drifted lazily overhead. Big Mac scuffed a hoof through the drying grass; a warm, late autumn breeze ruffled his hair. Closing his eyes, he breathed in the scent of clear skies and good soil.
“Hey there, big guy.”
Big Mac whuffled and snorted as a multi-toned tail brushed across his muzzle. A raspy giggle echoed above him. Realising that his sun-warmed spot on the hill was now dark and cooling, he blinked and smiled.
“Howdy, Dash.”
Rainbow Dash whisked her tail out of his way and peered over the edge of her personal cloud, her eyes glittering mischievously. “What’re you doing all the way up here for? Did AJ start nagging you again?”
“Naw.” Big Mac lidded his gaze and eyed her serenely. “I was waiting for you.”
Rainbow scoffed, clearly pleased and embarrassed. “Yeah, who would wanna miss out on all this coolness, right?”
“Not me, that’s for sure,” Big Mac replied indulgently.
Rainbow rolled her eyes. She allowed a long beat of silence to pass - Big Mac didn’t mind; he was no stranger to staying quiet, letting her chew on whatever was bothering her without complaint - before flopping down across her cloud and fiddling with her front hooves.
“Were you really waiting for me?”
Shyness was a rare emotion for Rainbow Dash, and Big Mac found it terribly endearing. “Of course I was. I waited for you every day this week. You always drop by at sunset.”
Rainbow’s nose scrunched up. “You noticed that, huh?”
“You’re real hard not to notice,” Big Mac murmured sincerely.
Rainbow made several more bashful noises before settling into a pleased sort-of hum. “Keep talking like that, hotshot, and ponies will start gossiping. What on earth would AJ say?”
Big Mac blew a chunk of hair out of his eyes. “Probably call us a couple of weirdos.”
Rainbow laughed, bright and brash. “That a nickname you wanna carry around for the rest of your life?”
Big Mac grinned up at her without hesitation. “Eeyup.”
