Newt has only ever had one other relationship outside of Soleil, and that was with the local brutish farm boy Smoke Tree, son of Applejack and Rarity. They were both late teens/young adults and had a lot of hate for the world, and this is what brought them together. They found a lot of common ground and related over how the rest of the world just didn’t get them. Their relationship had a lot of ups and downs, mostly downs, but they had a fair few good days

They luckily matured enough to realise their dynamic as a couple wasn’t healthy for either of them and broke it off for good after around 2ish years, but they stayed in contact and remain best friends to this day. It took Smoke a lot longer to get over his ex than it did Newt, heck even when Soleil entered the picture he’d grimace at the idea the mares together, but he’s completely moved on now and even teases Newt for her “situationship” with the princess. They’d never admit it but they do deeply care for each other, even back when they were dating they did. These two absolutely break my heart <3
