You may be wondering, why is he a Batpony if Mikey, his brother, is a unicorn?
Well, it’s a long story, but it boils down to the fact that Gerard used to be a unicorn, which he actually didn’t like being one, and his horn was broken, which made him hate it more.
and by twist of fate, he ended up becoming a bat pony, something he enjoys more.
