Description

I am done. I am not doing another gif anytime soon. It’s nightmarish. If I hadn’t gone past my stubbornness on not using layers, this would have taken triple the time to complete this (It took me like, a month and a half to finish this). Enjoy this 2-3 fps gif with a side of story telling?
The story’s long. I don’t recommend reading this unless you have a quarter an hour to kill

I awake on a pathway with no recollection of who I am and who I am meant to be. A light blue crystal road stretched out as as far as I could see. All around me, a collection of photos taken from somepony’s point of view or even third-person from the looks of it. Some photo from a camera maybe? I felt something tap my snout while I was in thinking.
“Boop!” somepony giggled. “I was wondering when you would show up”
I point to myself in confusion. The unicorn nodded and looked at me with soft eyes. Was he waiting for something? Maybe a question?
“What is this place?” that felt like a good way to start a conversation.
“Welcome to the mindscape. Where memories are stored and kept in condition for many years”
“Whose memories are these then?”
“That… that one’s complicated. It will take days of explaining, no doubt”
“Why not tell who it is right now?”
“I want to ease you into this first”
We walked on the crystallized road. Barely any noise graced my ears as we passed by photos and moving pictures. My eyes catch a video of two ponies chatting and getting along. One of the ponies in there looked awfully like the same pony in front of me.
“Hey, isn’t that you in this picture here? And who’s that pony you’re talking to?”
My guide raised an eyebrow and turned to look at the moving picture. The unicorn was squinting, probably in deep thought. After what was probably careful consideration, he faced me with a somber smile.
“Yeah that’s me or rather, it looks like me. You see… even though you can clearly see me up there. That’s not who I am. I am merely an apparition. A ghost or a figment of somepony’s imagination” his words made me stop.
“So you’re not a real pony?”
“I was never a real pony to begin with. Me and him? We’re very different from each other and yet so similar”
“But who is that pony talking to him?” I gestured to the blue pony chuckling at some joke the yellow pony said.
“That’s you… er… somepony who looks like you” my eyes widen at the revelation. “Yes. You aren’t real either”
“We did just come into life after all. What do you remember before you came to the mindscape?” he asked me. I thought and shook my head. “Exactly”
“But just because we’re not real doesn’t mean we can’t do anything while we’re here. Anyone who walks this road is fated to take care of the memories around us. If no one were to care for them… well, that’s where the mind gap comes in”
Mind gap? Without waiting for a question, the ghostly unicorn pointed a hoof over my shoulder. I looked behind me and saw a huge swirling portal. It was big enough to swallow me whole. I froze up, fear filled my brain as this terror was inching its way towards us. A firm hoof grabbed me by the leg and pulled me backwards, away from it. I stumbled but regained my hoofing quickly.
“It’s not really so much of a threat but it can be terrifying. It still is even now” he looked at me in the eyes. “There’s no need to be afraid. It’s slow. We can walk faster than it”
“Wh- what happens if I go in there? Or a memory?”
“I have no clue. Who or what goes in there never comes out. Think about it like it’s death. The great beyond or whatever” he turned away to look at a memory floating past him.
I kept my eyes on the mind gap. It appeared to be taking some old memory. I’m not brave enough to grab the memory from it’s grip but, I was curious at what is struggling to get away from it.
It was the same yellow unicorn talking to somepony else. Who is that pony?
