Seems to me the more natural way for Twilight to have revealed Spike’s secret crush on Rarity would’ve been after the matter between Rarity and Fluttershy had been resolved, and when she was among her friends, feeling as safe as she could feel. Then, she could’ve revealed the secret as minor compared to that matter, before realizing what she’d said or done.
