There is a fic in my mind inwhich the elements of harmony splitted Luna from her darkest side. In that form she is powerless and incomplete, so she later retrieve and subdue that part of her to evolve into adult Luna.

Luna was about the same size.
Ponies don’t change color when they get older.
Luna can shift her shape.

The Age mod spell wouldn’t have the effect shown, and Luna has another ability that would account for the change in appearance. Not really a sensible theory.
