This may be how the dog-pony conflicts began after the great emigration to central Equestria where Canterlot is located, when the three tribes moved from the northwest and established themselves in what were uninhabited lands that griffons may have formally claimed and then sold to the ponies as “Terra incognita”, “unknown land” which was not under the control of others. As this land was cleared for settlement and cultivation, the ponies began to expand their control far beyond the established borders, thus unknowingly entering deep into the diamond dogs`s traditional territories, and establishing colonies. The diamond dogs are deeply pragmatic, and are likely to avoid low-value sites that will be accessible to ponies, but as soon as the colonies expand and become administrative areas of communications and economics, serious conflict will arise when the two separate civilizations collide. In addition, the ponies came from the rich east coast with shopping centers and communications, and thus in the eyes of the diamond dogs accustomed to raiding - their loyalty to the royals (blood ties) will not prevent internal conflicts - will be sought after, to steal valuables.
As the jackals had probably discovered a couple of millennia early - the ponies had established themselves in Mesoponytamia probably with emigration through the forbidden forest (as big as Central America where remains of pony-dominated civilizations are found, and there are still primitive pony tribes there) - were the ponies valuable as slaves, the unicorns with their magic / telekinesis are more precise and sensitive in handling objects, the pegasi can manipulate weather and the earth ponies are much stronger than our own draft horses in reality. The first pyramids were built by the jackals themselves possibly in collaboration with the anugyptian cats, but they quickly got over to using the ponies as free labor that they can acquire with their conquests into Mesoponytamia.
Until organized pegasi armies came into the picture and displaced the jackals and anugyptian cats, already while Baast was alive it was observed that she does not like the ponies in FiM # 24. The remaining jackals ended up as servants of the new upper class which consisted only of pegasi, who in the show have a reputation for being very aggressive, militaristic and could be very violent in comparison to both unicorns and earth ponies. Since the pegasi would naturally serve as protectors of the new Equestria in the first centuries before the royal sisters took over, even though it was a loose state organization until Discord united the three tribal states into the modern Equestria, it means that they will intervene in the face of the diamond dog raiders and thus enters into a protracted conflict where prejudices against both sides arise and were allowed to rule, as seen in the show.
Because the diamond dogs have such a decentralized state system and were in the habit of waging war against each other through raiding and looting raids as in feudal Europe - castles in our world have a background as fortresses meant to protect the locals - and as pirates as bandits were scattered and partly accepted among the diamond dogs themselves, it meant that their warfare was decentralized in the face of the ponies. It also provides cover for covert warfare where the kings of Caninia can test the new kingdom for their own gain, with a motive that the ponies can hardly understand.
For Celestia, it must have been frustrated for centuries as she tries to maintain peace, in the face of the kings of Caninia who thought she and her people were invaders who needed to respect them and their demands. Then it is no wonder that the mysterious Diamond dog and Celestia look ugly at each other during the conference, there was a lot of bad blood between them. Good thing the sisters who took over after their father who may be the mysterious Diamond dog, are willing to start over in the face of the new reigning princess.
Not quite sure what you mean. Possibly Ponish not being my first language shining through.
@Background Pony #1A40
Is it possible animus might have also developed from, if it’s so difficult to determine where Diamond Dog territory begins and ends because of this highly decentralized approach, the ponies not knowing whether they trespassed until they started getting jumped on and enslaved?
Edited
From FF # 06 when Trixie was queen of diamond dogs in Dimondia, we know that the diamond dogs are a pragmatic people who chose their leaders based on their merits as Trixie’s ability to find gems, and be able to organize a functioning local community in strong isolation. But in Caninia it is different; it turned out that the “hidden kingdom” is far more than just a traditional kingdom, where it turned out that the sisters did not rule as ordinary princesses or queens, but as stewards of the kingdom’s resources and as representatives of their people, based on blood ties. Katherina did not try to stop Jennino from breaking out and building her own castle and residence on the other side of the gorge, and the diamond dogs treated the two queens equally as if they belonged to the same kingdom.
The diamond dogs do not believe in state as we humans understand it, they have a pack-based power system where one can voluntarily enter as leaving a dog pack, and thus could have very many separate and semi-independent enclaves subject to a bond of loyalty to those who have their authority on inheritance rather than merit, while choosing their leaders in their own ways. This is how the great kingdom of the diamond dogs is “hidden” from the rest of the world, they consist of many enclaves spread over a very large area - Dimondia can be considered to be exemplary for this kingdom. It is also thought that there may be colonies far away from Equestria (probably the western part where Caninia is located), because there are diamond dog pirates who must have a maritime tradition to be able to sail out to the world’s oceans, from FiM # 89. They may also have had a colorful history, including Anugypt where jackals, a subspecies of the diamond dogs, created their own empire with an emphasis on Egyptian culture. According to Discord in FiM # 24, the jackals were experts in warfare and torture. There are many indications that the first ponies in Mesoponytamia (east of Anugypt) worship jackals as gods or perhaps as divine rulers.
That was before the pegasi took Anugypt and renamed it Southern Equestria, probably during an invasion from the east. By then, the jackals had come into conflict with the Anugyptian cats who fled to Abyssinia, which is probably at the end of a traditional trade route to another continent. The conflict between the abyssinian cats and the diamond dogs is mostly unknown, but this may be because dogs were often raiders, pirates and competitors in trade while the cats were traders and explorers (curious as a cat) - so Anugypt may be the first place where these meet.
The story of Caninia is deeply fascinating, but very apolitical because it was partly deliberately done a lot to not elaborate on what relationship diamond dogs and the ponies had with each other, just “restart”, partly overshadowed by the multiple trees aspect. There are many indications that the relationship was not good, because “ruffians” lived in an area south of Ponyville where it was discovered that diamond dogs had an abandoned city in FiM # 02 whose fate was unknown. However, there are many indications that the city had been evacuated in a hurry. Since the ponies dominated the whole country from sea to sea and called this “Equestria”, which had its origin probably 1,500 years ago, and all indications are that Caninia is in the mountains of western Equestria (maybe Unicorn Range) - it must mean that the diamond dogs had been in conflict with the invading ponies for a long time. From Anugypt in FiM # 24 there is much to suggest that the jackals had ponies as slaves (slave warriors were very common in ancient Egypt), and from the show there are indications that these diamond dogs, even if they were just outlaws, know how to deal with their prisoners and have a background for their actions.
But the dog-pony conflicts seemed to have ended after the ponies reached the east coast towards the Luna Ocean and the powerful alicorns took over the government duty in Canterlot. Perhaps the changeling swarm that had ravaged and terrorized much of Equestria over a thousand years ago while Celestia was young, played a role in this, for as seen with the Storm King and the aftermath of his fall that triggered an important conference between the rulers from the known world, the balance of power is very fragile and self-adjusting.
But as seen between the mysterious Diamond Dog and Celestia during the conference; the past was very painful for both of them.
I also notice how all the smart, good and pretty ones seem to be female.
I understand that. I just don’t like the idea that the two variations are smart, good and pretty versus dumb, ugly and evil.
One could just take it as there being more than just one variation of their species.
And those looked like Diamond Dogs, even if they spoke perfectly. These here neither look nor sound the part. I seriously dislike how that makes it look like the ones we saw before just happened to be both dumb and ugly and the smart ones are, of course, also beautiful and all around better.
To be fair, we do see another group of Diamond Dogs in the Friends Forever series and it’s established that the ones the first encountered in the shows were just a group of Ruffians.
