Not really since Earth Ponies can dig fortifications faster, carry more equipment and supplies that are essential when behind enemy lines.  
Also, in wartime you need to make full use of your manpower, and limiting a branch to single species is a waste. Especially if you have willing volunteers.

Indeed which kind of makes Parachute infantry redundant, hell the plane could just be acting as a mother ship, on station to deliver supplies, or the Pegasi fly out of the plane and can maintain formation with any heavy weapons that get dropped with them
