Hazey Logic

I really like the model, but the scene composition and lighting are distracting me from enjoying it.

In the background the solid open spot in the center of similar width to her head/body gave me the weird impression that she was stuck in a doorway or hall or something but that’s nitpicky. That the right curtain seems significantly brighter than the left is confusing. The way the light falls on her ear, shoulder, and hip suggests a strong light source shining from right to left which would ordinarily either hit the two curtains fairly equally unless the two curtains are oddly angled such that they would meet in the middle at an obtuse angle with the left curtain roughly parallel to the location of the light source so it couldn’t be fully illuminated. This ambiguity of background depth really frustrates as I try to make sense of the model’s positioning.

The lack of color change on the head aside from her ear makes it either strangely flat or so bulbous as to move it out of line with a thin vertical line of light source. Add in that her head is clearly casting a shadow on her right shoulder means the stage right side light is slightly above her head which makes it odder that there is not a greater difference in color between the left and right sides of her face. I also struggle with the space her large round breasts should be occupying but they seem too flat from the lack of color change that normally suggests a curved object with a strong light source present. It seems brightest on the middle of each breast moving to shadow at the lower sweater edges as though the only light hitting them is from above the slightly overflowing breasts and close to the camera, but a light that would create such an effect would also blare out the shadow on her shoulder unless it was very weak, too weak to enforce this color pattern rather than a side to side gradient as the strong light source to the right of the picture would.

I think if there was some evidence of the stage right light on her exposed chest and face the main problem I have viewing this picture would be solved.
