Recent CalArts students all have varied styles
Like I said in my first post, I’m not especially bothered by Pony Life, and comments aren’t restricted to saying nice things anyway.
As for the rest, all I’ve done is refuse to stop using a phrase because some stranger has a personal vendetta against it. I haven’t deliberately prolonged the argument, I never intended to start a discussion about CalArts, and my original comment was directly related to the image, so you can take it up with the other BP if you think this isn’t the place for the subject.
If you wish to discuss other topics, please use the forums.
I’m trying to stop people insulting the university that Walt Disney, his brother and Nelbert Chouinard founded. They did not found this university just so we can use its name as an “artstyle” when in reality, it’s a stereotype. I don’t want people to have that mind set, saying that this artstyle is all that the California Institute of the Arts is capable of, when many of its attendants like Steve Anderson, Tony Anselmo, Tony Bancroft, Brad Bird, Eric Darnell, Pete Docter, Lauren Faust, Butch Hartman, Stephen Hillenburg, Glen Keane, John Lasseter, Craig McCracken, Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Rusty Mills, Rob Minkoff, Mike Mitchell, Rich Moore, Mark O’Hare, Mark Osborne, J. G. Quintel, Joe Ranft, Rob Renzetti, Chris Sanders, Gary Schwartz, Bruce W. Smith, Peter Sohn, Aaron Springer, Andrew Stanton, Genndy Tartakovsky, Paul Tibbitt, Gary Trousdale, Thurop Van Orman, Conrad Vernon and James Baxter all have their own unique artstyles. As far as I’m aware, only a few of those artists who do draw with those rounded smiles like Pete Browngardt, Alex Hirsch, Daron Nefcy, J. G. Quintel and Pendleton Ward actually did attend Calarts. I’m trying to stop “Calarts” from becoming a “cursed name”, a “bad name”, a name that’s considered the “Lord Voldemort” of the cartoon community. This is what I call being close minded, just like those people who at one point threatened to shoot Calarts because of the bean smile style (no really, it happened. Take a look at this: https://youtu.be/PO3od74EYVI?t=2409 ) and this is precisely why the cartoon community is not taken seriously.
But if you want to keep insulting that university by using its name for that “artstyle”. Be my guest. I can’t stop you from calling it. But I know for sure that I’m not the only one who has an issue with this name calling. There’s Mr. Enter, Animat, even Tony Bancroft refuses to call it that name (https://twitter.com/pumbaaguy1/status/999095156656693249 )

Doesn’t encompass the entirety of what I’m referring to. And what business is it of yours anyway?
Just say “Bean Smile” or “Bean Mouth” style. They’re not that difficult, right?
And what I’m saying is people have thought. It’s not that they don’t know the inaccuracy, they just don’t think it’s as big a deal as you do. You’re not going to get them to stop using the term by smugly “well ackshually”-ing them into submission every time you see it. They find the term useful. I used it here with full knowledge that someone would likely jump down my throat over it, though I was expecting champion site-wide pointless arguer TexasUberAlles to start the fight instead of some random BP. If you want to suggest alternatives, perhaps you could suggest some less unwieldy ones than what I keep hearing from him and what I heard from you in your first post here.
Personally, I don’t even get that upset over the art style, and most of my favorite modern cartoons use it. While I wish there was more variety- both in the art style itself and in the tone of the cartoons in which it appears- it’s not a deal-breaker. Getting snippy about the name is hardly as important as discussing the subject it concerns, and I’ll be a lot more willing to engage with you if you want to talk about that instead of superficial details.
But for now, I’m not going to stop saying “CalArts” and you can’t make me. Learn to live with that.
Well sometimes “easily recognized” doesn’t mean it’s accurate. I mean, it’s easy to assume that rabbits like carrots thanks to Bugs Bunny. When in reality, they prefer greener vegetables. It’s easy to assume that cats love milk like how much of media protrays them. When in reality, they are all lactose intolerant. Just because it’s easy to assume it’s the “calarts style” doesn’t mean it’s true. What I’m trying to say is that people need to think.
Well, in any case, the term isn’t used as a commentary on the school (though apparently there are some problems with it now), it’s used as an easily recognized description for the art style. Its history isn’t highly relevant.
I actually got this from TheMysteriousMrEnter in his review of Thundercats Roar.

Ahem. May I remind you that “CalArts” was a word that Ren and Stimpy creator, John Kricfalusi made just to stab at anything Disney related, including the Disney Renaissance. And keep in mind, Lauren Faust, creator of Friendship is Magic went to CalArts and even Tony Bancroft, supervising animator for Iago, Cogsworth and Pumbaa went to CalArts. Also, there are some shows with the Bean smile style that are actually made by those who did not attend CalArts like Steven Universe. It was made by a woman who studied animation in New York. There’s also the Amazing World of Gumball which was made in London, UK. You can hate this artstyle, you can called it the “Bean smile style or the “I think we went too far with the cartoony look” artstyle but stop calling it the “CalArts” style. It’s about as accurate as calling animation a “genre” and not a “medium”.
