CRASH!
Chance’s headshot up from his book as he turned to look at the kitchen doorway in alarm. The clamor sounded like something had been dropped on a hard surface, but he couldn’t imagine why. No one was in the kitchen as far as he kne-
“ITS OK I’M FINE!”
. . .
He stood corrected. With his marefriend’s reassurance that she was fine despite the noise saying otherwise, Chance turned back to his book. He had only gotten a few sentences in when another noise caught his attention.
“Hnnnnnn . . . huff huff . . . hnnnnnnnn”
Chance looked back at the kitchen. What in equestria was she doing in there? He felt he should just let her be, but his curiosity and concern won out in the end. Putting his book face down on the sofa seat beside him, he trotted cautiously to the doorway.
Chance peeked his head into the kitchen. “Hey Penelope, what you . . . . uh . . .”he trailed off, his mouth hung open in confusion.
His tiny- we’re talking millimeters in height here- breezie girlfriend was floating above their island counter, struggling to stay a float and hold onto the round egg that matched her in size.
Chance quickly bounded over to her until he was hoovering right above her. “Um, sweetie, are you okay? Do you need help?” he said, trying to sound calm while he was internally panicking. Subconsciously, he outstretched one of his paws as if he were readying to take the egg from her.
In a strained tone, Penelope managed to get out “No no . . . huffi’m fine huff . . . I just . . . need . . . to . . .”
Penelope grunted as she struggled to lift herself high above the rim of the mixing bowl. She managed to get half there when the egg began to slip from her grasp. She fumbled to catch it before it fell, but it was too late. It fell onto the counter beneath her, splashing up it’s white and yellow insides on nearly every part of her breezie body.
“Ooh no, no, no, no!” Penelope cried in despair as she worked to get the yolk off her face.
Chance teleported a napkin to his claw and gave it to her as he said, “hey, it’s ok Penelope, don’t worry about it. We have plenty more eggs in the fridge. Here, let me help-”
“NO! You don’t understand!” Penelope cried, clutching the napkin to her face in frustration.
He stared, startled by the outburst. “Wh- what?”
She looked up at him, itty bitty breezie tears threatening to pour down her face at any moment. “I. . . I was trying to make you breakfast. Like, how you always make me breakfast. I was going to make your favorite pancakes- by myself.”
“But why? Why all by yourself? You know you don’t need to do that,” he said softly.
“I *sniff* I wanted to show you I was capable of doing things on my own. That I could do things for you, like you’re always doing for me. But. . . but I guess I can’t.” She looked dolefully at the mess below her, a single tear ran down her muzzle and onto the cracked shell.
Chance smiled sympathetically at her, holding out his paw for the breezie to alight upon. “Hey, it’s ok Penelope. There are some things that everypony can’t do and everyone has their limits. Even if you can’t make pancakes by yourself without struggling, you’re so good in other areas more important than baking- like being an amazing breezie and loving marefriend!” He paused to softly kiss her little head, causing her to giggle.
He pulled away, satisfied to see her lovely smile once again. “And besides, you know I don’t mind doing a lot of things for you. It’s one of the awesome privileges of being your coltfriend!”
Penelope’s smile fell into a frown as she looked away. “Yeah, I know, and I’m really grateful. I just . . . I can’t help feeling like a burden to you sometimes.”
Chance put a finger under her chin and turned it towards him. “I understand, really. And if that’s how you feel, then I think I have the solution.”
Penelope perked up. “Oh really!? What?”
“You can help me help you! We’ll be a team and together we can do things. I can do the things big ponies do, and you can be the boss!” he said with a wink.
She smirked, and flew up until she was a few inches above his head. Looking down at him, she pointed her hoof out and said, “Well in that case, fetch me some more eggs. We’ve got some pancakes to make!
