Wait. Hold on. How is this NOT be a bold new direction? You said yourself that it’s a change from the slice-of-life style of storytelling to bring attention to what has been boiling under the series this entire time; that Twilight has a very special destiny awaiting her. It’s a progression of this world instead of the stasis that the normal format relies on.
 
Yeah, all the mane six have had themselves showcased; but it was always obvious that Twilight was still the main character. The big events revolved around her, as she spearheaded all the efforts with the Magic of Friendship.  
The cast is still important; but Twi’s role has been getting bigger and bigger, and at some point the next step has to be taken so that momentum doesn’t deflate into a crumbly balloon. Going past Twilight’s primetime would be the worst thing to do to her. Perhaps this is the time, whatever that means for the rest.

I see what he’s getting at and I’m sure a lot of others do as well, I just don’t give a fuck about Harry Potter.

Eh, not really. I say it from experience, because you eventually get called off by a friend about it, and then you notice that you have to put a constant effort at not treating him differently because of it. Sadly, authority afflicts relationships and you are better off dealing with it. I can’t find it right now, but there have been studies about it. Give me a moment to find them,

Except the story isn’t called ‘Twilight Sparkle and the Griffin’s Goblet’ and since series 2 not everything has had to revolve around Twilight and some haven’t featured her completely. Everyone’s had a story worth telling, from the lowly farmer to the eccentric dressmaker and they didn’t need to be ‘upgraded’ to make them interesting. A narrative world was constructed that didn’t rely on one particular character’s viewpoint for it to exist or to develop.
 
Twilight went from a proxy for the viewer in a new land to a character who exists independantly in it with her own part to play, no greater or smaller than anyone elses. It just seems that making her the centre of attention again and the crux of upcoming issues with her new responsibilities is a step back to the first series, rather than a bold new direction going forward.

Those ponies started as princess. Meeting someone who already has massive amounts of power and authority is totally different than having an extremely strong friendship with someone who is given a similar role.

Do you treat your friend the same after he suddenly gets a position of power? No, even amongst good friends, because the fact the change in status exists colors all actions within the relationship. This isn’t being cynical, it is just normal, unconscious behavior.

No doubt. But that doesn’t mean the relationship with said friends will not change, because any such large change causes people’s relationship with each other to change, and insist “no, it won’t” ignores everything we have seen about other’s behavior around princesses.
 
Also, so could anyone with the spell as far as it looks. She didn’t just go “poof, travel time”, no, she used a one-time deal which was most likely made to be easier to cast than Star Swirl.

Besides, becoming an alicorn is barely even anything for her. Her talent is MAGIC in a race where everypony can use magic. She can travel through time already.

Or she could realize that all of the incredibly strong magic that she’s worked so hard pales in comparison to the most powerful magic of all: Friendship. True friends are friends through it all.

That’s actually yet to be seen. This represents a complete change of the formula, or a very hamfisted new development. I want the first to be a success, and will pray to my god of choice for the second one to not completely suck, but your act of “fuck, it doesn’t matter” is rather naive to the fact this is quite a very, very, very big thing.

I’ll be alright with it. All of it. But only if it’s adequately explained.

Ehmm… read that again. There is nothing about that. You are extrapolating, just like the people saying this will destroy everything. I am pointing out to things we have seen in show (reactions of ponies to Luna, Celestia, and Cadance) and concluding this involves far more changes than simply sticking wings to her, and if they simply act like if they weren’t there I really doubt things will work out in the long run.

You, I appreciate your positivism, but no matter how much you repeat it, there is a reason why you don’t have the Alicorn’s hanging about all the time: they are creatures which are either feared out of simply their status of authority. Hell, all the episodes they appeared have shown just how differently they are treated by others.
 
Her transforming into an Alicorn will change things very much, and not recognizing that will only make things feel artificial.
