Cassie probably experimented with Equestrian drugs during her later teens. Of course, being all pony-like, lots of drugs in the pony world are magically and sparkly, but that doesn’t erase their negative effects.
She gets her weekly dose from Khaleesi, who usually makes her own stuff. Khal is her best friend’s sister, so she gets a special lil discount and all that. Twilight isn’t really aware of what’s going on, but it’s Tempest who walks in on her one day, breathing frighteningly fast and mindlessly lost in some reality. She stays with her daughter for the rest of the night until the dose wears off, thankful that she’s still alive. Cas stops usage entirely after that experience (or so Tempest assumes), and receives a pretty lengthy discussion from Momma Fizz.
Drug use was Cassie’s method of coping for a time. She doesn’t talk much about what she went through. Like real life, it made her forget her problems for a little while, made her feel happy again, even if for a moment. But it doesn’t erase her problems, and in the end it ended up doing her more harm than good.
Damon never really liked what she was doing, and how she was treating her body. He never started doing drugs. Watching his little sister start was painful enough, but when his best friend started too… he tried his best to get her off, but it’s not so easy. He didn’t tell her parents what was happening, or his own, but is glad Tempest found her out.

Not really sure if this is canon or not, I just wanted to play with lighting and lining. It can be canon if you want it to be! I might expand on this further, but I also might not lol
