Ha! People are not afraid of how terrible it will be. People are afraid of what EMBARRASSING this generation promises to be.  
G3.5 was embarrassingly childish. Even more than previous generations, though not by much. This was not the main difference between this generation and previous ones. But it was part of this difference. The generation was so despicable that even all the plots of the “series” (fillers from beginning to end, as far as I can see) were devoid of much sense. (And in G1, by the way, as far as I remember - there were rather gloomy plots, funny) [Plots - in the sense of “plots”, and not those plots that can be mistakenly thought of]  
Then came the G4. It was great! It is great now! It will always be great.  
And now there is an analogue of G3.5, only now it is G4.5. Accordingly, people’s expectations are manifested in their discontent. It was obvious even earlier that Hasbro might not expect such success as G4, so you need to go the other way. TOTALLY different. And it will be fun. The picture and their behavior are already funny, although Pinky is trying to “break out of this terrible, terrible form.” But besides this, something else is also obvious:  
It can just be filled with embarrassing moments. And many fans don’t like this. Yes, this is not the reason for everyone who is dissatisfied, but this is the reason for many who are dissatisfied.  
In any case, this promises to be fun. Did you get popcorn?)

Right? it’s like, we get to see more of the characters we love and apparently that’s a bad thing and we can’t like more than one thing, or version of that thing?
 
I love this show, the characters, and most of the fandom, but holy shit do we spit in the faces of people who make the stuff we love sometimes.
 
Conversely I get that some people wouldn’t like it and that’s ok too, but the toxicity I’ve seen in the last 20 minutes alone for these new little designs has been disgusting.

It’s definitely gonna be an unpopular opinion to think that this spin-off’s style isn’t horrible like people are spouting

I have a feeling that this is a metaphor for those who look back at their edgy teenage years.
