Starlight Glimmer

Starlight, unlike her best friend Sunburst, grew up in a small yet suffocating family. Being the foal of divorced parents, her father Firelight attempted to be there for her in every way possible to the point of crowding his daughter. He came up with cutesy nicknames, planned playdates, and basically stuck to her side from morning til night. While some attention was always appreciated by children, too much can cause anxiety and stress. Her only escape was going over to Sunburst’s house and spend all day practicing magic and goofing off.

Sunburst and Starlight had known each other since infancy. In fact, both of their mothers were pregnant at the same time. The two attributed their close bond to this and spent as much time as possible together during the long summer days. Starlight adored Sunburst’s family dynamic and wished hers could be more similar. Sunburst had other siblings and their parents focused on giving all their children love instead of smothering one of them. In fact, one of them was already at Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns and Starlight would help Sunburst send care packages to his older sister.

The day Sunburst got his cutie mark, Starlight felt that everyone had left her behind. Living in a smaller town, everyone was off celebrating Sunburst’s achievement and Starlight wallowed in her sadness and slight jealousy. It was barely a week before Sunburst had been enrolled in Celestia’s Academy, just like his older sister. Before Starlight could react, her best friend had gotten his cutie mark, packed up for school, and moved away without a second glance. She felt awkward trying to make another friend in her small village. All other ponies her age were receiving their cutie marks and were focusing on themselves, which made Starlight felt left out and alone. She became rather antisocial after Sunburst had left, shutting herself in her room for hours on end in an attempt to jumpstart her cutie mark.

With all of her time alone, Starlight focused on her magic and worked hard, hoping that she would be able to excel enough to get herself accepted to Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. She received her cutie mark as a talented spellsmare and felt confident in her skills when she auditioned for the well-known Canterlot academy. However, after a student went rogue and endangered the population of the city, Celestia was much more careful in her potential candidates. When she saw what Starlight was capable of, the princess was immediately brought back to the memory of Sunset Shimmer and she chose to reject Starlight’s application.

When Starlight was in Canterlot for her audition, she tried desperately to find Sunburst at the academy. Unfortunately, and without Starlight’s knowledge, Sunburst had flunked out of Celestia’s School and had moved out of the city in shame. Thinking the worst for herself, Starlight Glimmer assumed that he had become so powerful and successful that he had already left, leading some amazing life. And with her sudden rejection to the academy, Starlight felt her blood boil. No one would have left her if no one had gotten their cutie mark, so she set to work on fixing the world around her.

Starlight left Canterlot, her mind consumed with terrible thoughts, and decided to fix up an abandoned village to start her experiments. Most ponies that stumbled upon her town were travelling in or out of Canterlot and with Starlight’s talents, was able to make them abandon their families and become apart of her secret plot to create the perfect utopia.

With a sizeable amount of ponies who “believed” in her cause, Starlight was running a successful village with no real concerns. She started to think that she had, in fact, done exactly what she had set out to do. Everyone was happy and friendly towards one another. No one seemed to have a problem. Until the Mane 6 suddenly arrived in her town.

After her village had been torn apart and cutie marks had been returned to all the townsponies, Starlight Glimmer decided it would be best to hide from the Princess of Friendship and her buddies to plan her next course of action. Twilight Sparkle had ruined her future and all her hard work, so Starlight was more than ready to make her regret ever finding her village. She created a spell to send Twilight back in time again and again, each time being unable to save her friends. Starlight reveled in the princess’s failure until she was pulled in as well, forced to see what her magic and selfish actions had caused.

The last thing Starlight expected after her attempt to destroy Twilight and her friends was to become a student to the Princess of Friendship. She didn’t believe she deserved such kindness, but the Mane 6 was sure to let her know that no matter what she had done, she was with friends now. At first, Starlight didn’t take being Twilight’s student too seriously. After all, she had made friends with the Mane 6 and had apologized to the villagers, so wasn’t that enough? But with all of Twilight’s lessons, Starlight realized how much more she had to learn.

Saving Equestria with Discord, Thorax, and Luna was a huge step for her and for the first time, Starlight felt like she had made a huge step in the right direction. She was finally able to accept that a creature’s differences made them useful in situations like this and was something to be celebrated, not destroyed. Starlight still knows she has a long way to go, but she has plenty of friends who will stand with her.

Starlight is still more than happy to help Trixie with her magic show, but tends to only lend a hand whenever the two don’t have to travel far. After their less than ideal travel situation, Starlight is sure to let her friend know when she’s had enough.

Starlight is believed to be a Pure Unicorn, but an ancestor or two of hers are earth ponies. This shows subtly in her body type. Unlike most unicorns, Starlight Glimmer is shorter and solidly built. She is shorter than a good majority of her friends, only taller than Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash.
