Some artists were, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was what the commissioner paid for. Don’t forget, most church artwork/sculptures/decorations were paid for by the modern equivalent of multi-millionaires. The average artist was not donating portraits to the church pro bono.
If there is, I haven’t been part of it yet.
