Twilight is also not really an unusual name for a fantasy character, or a horse… or someone’s pet cat.

As a fun fact:
• Twilight originates from the Filly Fairy line, from 2009, predating Friendship is Magic.
• Sparkle originates from the Filly Unicorn line, from 2011.
It’s very likely a coincidence in Sparkle’s case, and almost certainly entirely one in Twilight’s case.

Filly is a Hong Kong-based toy franchise developed by Dracco Company. The franchise was founded by Jacob and Henrik Andersen,[1][2] with further development and designs provided by Tine Norbøll. The target group is primarily girls aged around four to seven years.[3][4]
On May 30, 2007, the toy company Hasbro sued Simba Dickie Group for infringing on their My Little Pony “G3” designs for “Little Fairy Pony”, “My Sweet Pony”, “Steffi Love Evi Unicorn” and “Steffi Love Evis Fantasy Pony”.[17] On July 20, 2007, Hasbro won the lawsuit and Simba was ordered to pay a fine. Hasbro sued Simba a second time on March 30, 2010, due to the toylines “Little Fairy & Pony”, “Unicorn Friends” and “Dream House”, and was resolved on January 22, 2013 with Hasbro winning again.[18] Filly wasn’t mentioned in either lawsuits.

Filly’s Sparkle may be a lot older than Twilight Sparkle. It’s not known how long fillys live, yet. Even the words of the creator of toy lines who also worked on the show in the early days says not everything was defined, early fillys of ‘Princess’ toy line could have been babies or they could die unlike something the current canon gives us.

Pretty cool to be namesakes with Twilight Sparkle, I guess.  
And Sparkle the filly is the only one who reminds of Twilight of ‘MLP’ mostly, not Twilight the filly (though she is supposed to be one of the main characters in the Funtasia).
