Yes, people don’t actually want this war and bloodshed, everywhere I look, with family at home, people over internet, work, all are shocked and appaled by this. People call their friends and family in Ukraine asking if they’re alright. Even at the time when even a single person pickets will get you detained people are coming out to protest it in thousands.

The Russian people are not the Russian government, the people can still be friends and be against the government trying to break them apart.

The thing is all these countries joined NATO because they were afraid of Russia. Now Ukraine wants to join too and even Belarus seems to consider a more pro-western course. That’s because they know NATO is not going to invade them anytime soon but Russia might.

In fact USA plans to withdraw its forces from Europe in about 15 years to focus on the incoming war with China. And the consensus in EU seems to be that most likely Russia will use this opportunity to invade Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. NATO even recommended these countries to train people for upcoming guerrilla warfare under Russian occupation.

They annexed Crimea to have control over the Black Sea. It’s similar to Kaliningrad Oblast in that regard. The exclaves help project power over the region. Also the invasion helped destabilize Ukraine which tried to take a more pro-western stance and to interfere with Russian operations on the Black Sea.

@Tankie Dashie
Imagine if some oblast in Russian Federation held such a referendum and over 90% voted to leave Russia and join another country. I don’t see Russian government letting them leave. It’s because the real reasons for annexation are political and the referendum was just a justification.

  1. This is a region, the majority of whose population are ethnic Russians, where pro-Russian sentiments are traditionally strong and the Russian Black Sea Fleet is located. Should I even tell you, how some Ukrainians threat Russians?
  2. We have results of referendum: 96,57% voted for joining Russia.
    So what’s the problem?

LOL
Dude, I don’t like Putin too.. But you’ve just really made me laugh.

Well, the same reason why USA wag wars all over the world since the middle of the previous century. It’s a simple national benefit. I don’t care much about Crimea and personally don’t give a sh@t, which country has it. But I know, that there was a referendum vote. People were asked, people answered – just a democracy. If it would be as simple annexing as you imagine, then Russia could just annex DNR and LNR. And they did ask Russia to help them. But they stayed on their own, as you can see.
