Yeah, I guess some just see it through rose-tinted nostalgia goggles. Besides, they didn’t hurt the movie’s legacy to badly by riffing it.
 
Speaking of movies, the MST3k Movie itself had alot of executive meddling, including making it shorter then an actual MST3k episode. They spoofed the troubled production in the host segments for “The Incredible Melting-Man,” a movie that also ironically had executive meddling. (The original director of it says he prefers the MST3k version.)  
In fact, word is, “Melting Man” was supposed to be a parody, (hence some of it’s odd, or even comical moments) but the studio made them re-edit it into a straight horror movie.

Even if you take the movie at face value and include all the bits they trimmed for the riff, it’s still a mess in terms of plot and character development.

Y’know, I heard some people were upset that the MST3k movie riffed on “This Island Earth” as some consider it a “sci-fi classic,” but forget it was rather weird even for it’s day.

“Pony wranglers? There weren’t any ponies in this movie!”
