There’s your answer. Her offensive spell in S5 was easily thwarted by Twilight. She got outclassed so bad she had to resort to schemes. But in S6 onwards, AFTER dilligently studying and practicing magic with THE Twilight Sparkle herself, we see major improvements in her skills.
Season 8 Starlight probably can destroy Season 5 Starlight with relative ease.

Well, thank you both. I like her, but one thing is being at the same level or even surpassing Twilight and other is being more powerful than freakin Discord.

I feel so sorry for Starlight. You can tell the stuff Discord says was getting to her. She’s tries so hard to make Twilight proud, but then you have this ass*ole come in and try to sabotage her hardwork.

Lesson learn : Never upset Starlight to the point of no return, I think the trigger word for Starlight is power hungry unicorn.

Training with Twilight since back in season 6 is probably what got her to this point.
