It’s really no different than selling paintings.

Yes, actually it is completely different and it’s still a scam. Again, Deviantart is wrong for not cracking down on this, and I sure as hell don’t like the fact that this cancer is spreading to derpibooru.

You can cry, “chill” all you like, but you’re still being unpleasant.

You would be buying one of the designs and “adopting” them as your OC. This would mean you own rights to the character, as you would any OC you make, and you can then use them in art, stories, RP, etc.

I made these designs for fun but I don’t really intend to use them myself, so I offer them to anyone who may be interested in having a new OC. Even if they don’t sell, I appreciate the views and interest in my art more than anything else :)

Hey, chill out dude. If you don’t like adopts you don’t have to buy them. I’m just one of many people who make art and offer it for anyone who would be interested in buying it. It’s really no different than selling paintings. I made everything myself, bases included, so I put my own time and ability into making these. No one has to buy and use these designs, but some people rather enjoy doing so.

It’s a scam that keeps taking place over on Deviantart. For some reason some of the members there think it is OK to do.

Basically, an “artist” will draw a totally original character. Usually by picking colors and hairstyle to apply to a base. They might name the characters. They might even type up a paragraph or two of “backstory.” But usually nothing more than colors/hairstyle/clothing.

They will then “sell” that design. Not a particular drawing of the design, just the color-selection/style/clothing. Typically a name. They are selling the fact that they made up a character.

The purchaser, potentially themselves an artist, can then make use of that design. Such as to draw it. Or commission other artists to draw it. Use it in fanfics. Whatever. Usually, the one offering the “adoption” will set rules. Like not letting the purchaser turn around and re-sell the design to a third person. That kind of thing.

Why they refer to it as “adoption” or think this is something they should be allowed to sell is beyond me.
