My only concern is that they’d not be treated as the pretty-much grown individuals they are, and have an older pony watching over them, as if they can’t do things on their own. A cute and silly or lighthearted story and plot would be lovely, if the three main characters are written with respect.

A murder mystery or haunted schoolhouse does sound like it would be more exciting than say, a secret room full of candy. I guess I’ll have to read the book (or a review of it) to find out what the mystery is.

Gasp as they read two books at once!  
Go ‘ewwww!’ as author Penumbra Quill goes into great detail about searching the victims’ remains for clues!  
Become immensely uncomfortable as Applejack explains to the fillies what all that white stuff is and how it got there!
