Pretty much this, given that for better or for worse, Starlight is the ponyMan’s Sunset.

So the character that’s been around the least amount of time compared to the other characters has about the 8th highest growth, already passed tow characters from season 1 and a character from season 2 and is well on the way to taking over another background waifu, and you think derpi hates her? Pretty sure this means that enough people like her to put her on a pedestal. Or try to start another comment war.

You know, the thing about these numbers that gets me interested, is that Starlight has been on break since October 27, of last year. Meanwhile, the main six (the only characters with more ‘growth’) have had non-stop content within that timeframe. The movie had been released within that month and was still a big deal, and it also came to dvd within that timeframe. They had all the shorts that are still going on today. There was the big fifty minute Forgotten Friendship special.
 
Point is, within the timeframe of this graph, the main six had eight of the Better Together shorts, The CYOA shorts, Forgotten Friendship, the Beach shorts, and leftover movie content to draw on. Starlight has three episodes of Season eight, which the main six also draw from. Yet she still has 30-50% of the others images.
 
Now, I would never do something as dumb as try and make some claim towards character popularity based on derpibooru image counts, but if I try and use OP’s logic, this is very interesting to think about.
