Solar Flare is the first born and only daughter of former Wonderbolt, Firestreak, and Sunset Shimmer. Due to not being a “true unicorn” (Genetically has a different species as a parent - true unicorns have both unicorn parents), Solar designated her life to proving she could be just as powerful at magic as any pure blooded unicorn.
At an early age, Solar became rivals with Crescendo, seeing him as a threat in Magic Kindergarten after learning he was Princess Twilight’s son. She heard stories of how her mother was originally supposed to be Princess Celestia’s student before Twilight, and vowed to make up for that replacement and become stronger than Twilight’s own offspring.
Despite her constant training and pushing herself over and over, Solar never seems to become stronger than Crescendo. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t best him in anything, so eventually she started to give up trying to beat him and focused more on becoming more powerful/skilled in general. Somewhere in between her envy for Crescendo and desire to get stronger, she ended up developing feelings for her rival. These feelings confused her, but she couldn’t deny they were there.
As they got older, Solar and Crescendo were dueling together when she accidentally revealed her feelings for him. This threw Crescendo by surprise which allowed Solar to finally defeat him in a duel. After a long awkward silence, Crescendo offered his hoof and asked if she would like to train with him to get better. This eventually led to them dating.
The news of Solar Flare and Crescendo being in a relationship came as a shock to everypony who knew them, especially to Nova and Apple Spritz. Besides the fact Spritz was best friends with Crescendo, she was also in love with him; And Solar knew that. So whenever they were in public together, Solar would flaunt their relationship around Spritz, trying to make her jealous. However, Crescendo was unhappy with her sudden change in personality and showboating, and began pleading with her to stop. This spawned the first of many arguements the couple exchanged together, eventually forming into a toxic relationship. Their competitive natures came back out and their rivalry history kept the two in constant stress. They fought constantly, and Solar Flare let the idea of controlling him get to her head and she became verbally abusive. (Unintentionally) Finally, Apple Spritz stood up to Solar about her attitude which angered her even more. Solar challenged Spritz to a Magic Duel, winner gets Crescendo. (Despite Crescendo’s pleas) Knowing Apple Spritz couldn’t use magic beyond levitation, Solar Flare knew she would win, so challenging her was clearly unfair. Now evident of Spritz’s feelings for him and fearing that she would get hurt, Crescendo interfered with the duel and ended up getting struck by Solar Flare’s magic attack instead.
This broke Solar Flare out of her blind rage and made her realize what she had done, instantly regretting it.
After that event, Solar Flare knew she couldn’t forgive herself, and didn’t argue back when it came time for Crescendo to as for them to break up. She knew their relationship wasn’t meant to be, and out of remorse let him go without a fight. Crescendo saw how sincere her apology was, though, and offered for the two of them to go back to being just rivals. This made Solar feel a little better, and she agreed. They went back to being rivals, but they understood each other a bit more.
Due to not being a true unicorn, the other unicorns throughout Magic School did not believe she would ever surpass them with a pegasus for a father. Solar ended up being the second most powerful unicorn to graduate, right behind Crescendo of course.
Throughout Magic School, Solar Flare heard stories of Upperclassman Blazing Ember, and always wanted to meet him; But no pony actually saw him on campus. He seemed to just be a Student Myth, but Princess Celestia confirmed he was a true student, and possibly even more powerful than Crescendo; If not equal to.
Later in life when Solar Flare is preparing for an Entrance exam to get into the Academy of Gifted Unicorns, she learns she needed to perform a spell impressive enough for Celestia to grant her entrance. During her first practice exam, she felt she did well with her performance, until she met a stallion who was watching, and told her the spell was simple enough for beginners to perform. This angered Solar Flare and threatened him to a duel to prove she wasn’t a beginner. After talking to one of her best friends, Fire Starter (Daughter of Spitfire and Fast Clip) Fire Starter reveals that pony was Blazing Ember himself; Which makes Solar Flare nervous and regret challenging him. This new fear gives her no choice but to ask for help from the one pony she knew could help her beat him: Crescendo.
After some awkward conversation, Crescendo agrees to help train Solar for the entrance exam duel. He teaches her to channel her cutie mark’s inner power, and eventualy creates a performance spell that he believed would blow Blazing Ember out of the running.
This training brought Crescendo and Solar closer as friends again, and he helped give Solar the confidence she needed.
Despite all her efforts, Solar Flare didn’t come close to winning against Blazing Ember. She admitted defeat and gave up on her dreams of entering the Academy of Gifted Unicorns, only to discover it was all a set up and that Blazing Ember was already a student at the school. He was testing Solar Flare to prove to Celestia he chose a unicorn was great potential to take on as an apprentice. Honored and surprised, Solar Flare agreed to be his apprentice and earned her place as a student of the Academy.
