Description

A “latch-key kid” is someone whose parents are so busy that the kid is alone most of the time and they have their own key to the house.

Not gonna lie, this definitely explains a few things.

Image itself doesn’t include the part where I rather embarrassingly assumed it meant “orphan”, but you can see that in the link.

And hey, since he gave me a straight answer instead of a vague non-answer because NDAs, maybe they’re planning on doing something with this in season 8…

Gotta admit though, the comments in the EQD article managed to stay mostly civil for once. Kind of surprised, considering that usually anything involving Starlight there ends in a dumpster fire of a comments section.

It makes me think about Starlight’s relationship with magic.

Latch-key-kids need to learn to take care of themselves because their parents are not around. For Starlight it probably meant relying her overpowered magic for everything. Whenever she had a problem she just magic-ed it away.

And absent parents also means absent limits. She could do whatever she wanted without any supervision. Maybe her unintentional abuse of magic is the reason she never had any friends other than Sunburst.

Did we really need to merge the two images since they were technically different (I had a different avatar and display name)?

Ah, I was getting it wrong. XD At least, half wrong.

Yeah, I was a latch-key kid myself. Never had a problem with it, personally, but having your child just walk home and open the house up themselves, it’s not exactly a great option for a number of reasons. Most notably, because you’re out of your child’s life for half the day, and when you come home you probably want to sleep for a bit. My mother was like this, and thus my sister and I were left to our own devices. We had a lot of fights, and a lot of violence, but now that I’m an adult I wouldn’t change any of it.

Well, perhaps my parents being there for me. That would’ve been nice.

Oh hey, one of my tweets ended up on EQD again.

It’s happened at least 5 times now. Does that make me horse-famous?

I think it was the opposite. I needed to do a search on this term. A “Latch-Key Kid” is described as someone who comes home from school to an empty house. Her parents were too busy or disinterested to raise her properly.

Though I’ve been cautioning myself and others not to take this too literally. I’m hoping we could get some explanation in the show proper.

That’s a bit upsetting, to be honest. She had terrible parents. Keep her safe, but don’t give her any life skills.

I wouldn’t change it, though. Glim is cute. Glim is a good one now.

I wonder what’s more cruel; that this was a joke, or that this was real. If it was a joke, then there are two possibilities: 1. her parents never raised her right, or 2. her parents were dead–hence, the joke.

Hey now, we aren’t supposed to be explaining how Starlight’s story makes sense, only how it’s an unsalvageable train wreck.

I still think it would’ve been better if they had shown Sunburst as the last and closest of a small group of friends who left or were taken from her group when they got their cutie marks, but otherwise I think your reasoning fits perfectly.
