Just got Etrian Odyssey V and started creating guild members. This is the first thing that came to mind when I saw this Pugilist portrait. You can practically hear him going “YEAH!”.
Elves in the game are called Celestrians/Lunarians (US and Japan, respectively). The Brownie-like race are called “Brounies”. And it has Bulk Biceps (whose name doesn’t fit unless you use “B. Biceps”, so I went with his fanon name). It’s hard not to think of MLP!

Lamia, Dryad and Zombie Dragon are toast! I raised the level cap to 99. I killed the Primordiphant and Harvester. All that remains is to max out my characters to 99, and (maybe) defeat the Star Devourer.
I figured out how to make Formaldehydes in the game. You have to kill an Alluring Imp (they start appearing in the sixth stratum, on the 27th floor) while it’s panicked. You then sell the Stupifying Orb to make the Formaldehyde.
I am actually shocked I beat Lamia. I just barely beat her. Everyone was low on TP, I was out of Amritas and there were four snakes. I have to give Mae the Botanist props for landing the final blow. If she missed, I would have lost the fight, one hit from victory.

Maybe I will go with the Shaman/Botanist in the back line (it’s like the Troubadour/Medic I’ve used before). I’m also leaning towards what you suggested for the front row, but I’m not sure whether to switch either the Fencer/Harbringer with a Dragoon. I’ve always played with a tank in previous games.
Then again, I’ll probably switch things up as the guild goes deeper into the labyrinth. Besides, it’d be a shame not to try out the Celestrian/Therian races.
And uh, yeah. I am playing on advanced. I’m used to the classic experience, but I wouldn’t mind switching the difficulty level if I really get stuck or if I’m just going to grind levels for new/rested members.
Use a Fencer, Puglist and a Harbinger on the front line. And use a Botanist and a Shaman on the back line. That’s how I made it through the first five strati. Believe me when I say I had a crapton of trouble with the Empyreal Bridge. For Celestia’s sake, I had an easier time with the Hall of Darkness! And that’s saying a lot!
Man. I suck at Etrian Odyssey V. It’s sad that I could beat the Hall of Darkness, yet the Empyreal Bridge destroyed me a thousand times over this morning (and that’s just on Basic, Celestia knows how horrible that Advanced could be). Empyreal Bridge is (in theory) the demon spawn of both the Hall of Darkness and the Claret Hollows.
I may be one of the first people to beat Etrian Odyssey V in the first week.

I’m still experimenting to see what will be my initial party for V, but “Snowflake” will definitely be in the front line!
In truth, I’ve only finished the first game on the DS. Been playing without walkthroughs for the challenge and to avoid spoilers, but maybe now I’ll check from time to time next time I get stuck. I’ve only gotten to the 2nd stratum in II, but I’ve gone at least halfway through III and IV. Might pick up IV again and finish it, especially since going after shiny FOEs for quick leveling makes it easier to experiment with rest/retire and skill allocation.
But before anything else, I’ll try to finish SMT:Strange Journey first. I started playing it again it after seeing previews for the upcoming 3DS version.

I loved the third stratum, the Fetid Necropolis, but I don’t love the ghosts, because they can possess your party members. We already have Curse! Do we need to make it worse!?
