It doesn’t hurt that Tempest’s true name Fizzlepop Berrytwist makes her more sympathetic in her book.
I prefer this interpretation. The Stormy Road prequel book certainly hints at it.

So, basically, the book sort of borrows the concept from various Looney Tunes cartoons of the past.
According to this book there’s none until very end. He tries as hard as he can to be liked and respected but fails every single time. Everything ends nicely like in this pic.
