I always just thought the black mist was the essence of NMM that Luna created leaving her body and going off to do something else, the show had a lot of weird open ended endings that didn't go anywhere.[/bq]
If that were truly the case, then the mist would have been explicitly shown _*coming from Luna herself_*. But instead, it comes from off-screen, and surrounds Luna. Now would it come from off-screen if Luna was its source? The contradiction in the claim that Luna created the black mist is so obvious, that I shouldn't have to point it out.

But yeah I personally think Luna created NMM with her own magic out of hatred and that magic manifested itself into an entity that can survive outside of her like the tantabus.[/bq]
Which, again, wouldn't add up with everything that we know about how Luna was before she got tricked into getting possessed. As far as we see of Luna in, say, Journal of the Two Sisters, Luna doesn't hate Celestia at all, not even to the point where she would want to get rid of her. Plus, Lauren Faust did say that evil magic took control of Luna, begging the question of where the magic came from, and the question of why said evil magic would be cast on Luna. Both of which the comics more than answer.

And there's also the thing about Anubis, and why he reminded Sweetie Belle of Nightmare Moon, to consider.

And there's also the thing about Nightmare
Rarity talking about herself as if she and Nightmare Moon were one and the same being; the logical implications of which don't even have to be mentioned.
