Welp, I made something with this method and I’m happy with how it came out. I’ll soon find out what others think of it because I figured it was good enough to upload.

Yup, I found the body they used for this. The body is from a Hatsune Miku model. It has the same bikini and everything. They clearly did some retexturing and put the EQG heads on them.

Doesn’t hurt to try. I took classes in drawing off of references a few years ago. If I can make a realistic self portraits looking in a mirror, I’m sure I can handle making 2D art off of a cel shaded model. Going to be putting this models together, and if it works out, I’ll have a new piece up this week.

Trust me, referencing posed 3D models is not the way to go.

Honestly, the bodies here are probably ripped from some other MMD model. I could probably find a similar model and put it together with the blender models the same way. The model would probably have a hideous seam, but it’s not like I’d have to draw the seam.

3D models offer far more flexibility in posing. I could draw them in angles that haven’t even been vectored before. And I would have it all in one reference, so no more having to Frankenstein multiple references to create a new pose. I could just pose the model, render it, and then use the render as a single reference.
 
As for the models, I do know about the ones you sent me. The dressed models look great, but I’m looking for good body shapes to reference off of. There are nude versions of those models, but the hips are super flat on them.
 
The models here are a little more high quality in terms of body shape.
