More wizardly horsies! Today, meet Twilight’s mentors and two of the most revered and powerful witches in the land, Celestia and Luna!

Celestia

Celestia, in this AU, is the headmistress of the oldest and most well-renowned magic academy in Equestria, the Celestial School of Spellcasting. She is a unicorn, and in her younger days, was known as an extremely powerful Incantational sorceress, which means she specialized in writing and casting language/song-based spells, charms, and hexes. Since taking on the role of headmistress upon her mother’s retirement, Celestia has become a respected but much-beloved mentor to hundreds of aspiring wizards, many of whom have gone on to become quite renowned in their own fields. Notably, she is known to have mentored all 5 members of the Harmony Guild, and to have overseen their rise to prominence in the realm of magical protection/warfare. It is also rumored that she is among the very few ponies in Equestria that know the current whereabouts of the now long-disbanded Guild, though she has refused to comment on these claims.

Celestia is revered for her wisdom and seemingly endless knowledge of the magical arts, and loved for her generosity and open-heartedness. At the same time, her many eccentricities and quirky sense of humor, along with an unconventional teaching-style, have left many of her students and peers shaking their heads in bewilderment and puzzling deep into the wee hours just trying to “figure her out”.

She is deeply protective of her school-faculty and her students, and would quite literally lay down her life to keep them safe.

Luna

Luna is Celestia’s younger sister, and professor of Astronomy and Magical Combat at the academy. She is the unspoken “vice” headmistress, often brainstorming with her sister on ideas for improvement within the school. She specializes in Astrological Divination and defensive/combat magic, having once, as a younger unicorn mare, been a formidable presence on the Wizard Dueling scene, a sport similar to boxing or pro wrestling… but, you know, with magic. She was forced into retirement, however, by an incident involving the sometimes unpredictable nature of her magic, which was known, at times, to take her over and cause some severe havoc. To cut a long story short (for now), this incident resulted in the injury of several bystanders. including her opponent, and Luna was banned from the professional Dueling rings until further notice. As can be imagined, Celestia had to pull an awful lot of strings in order to get her sister signed on as the academy’s Magical Combat professor, but in the end she was triumphant; and while Luna was initially apprehensive about interacting with the younger generation in a combat setting, she got the hang of it, and was glad to know her years of training and studying could still be of use to her and others. As for Astronomy, she mainly teaches it because she loves hanging out in the Observatory; a globular, metal room atop the highest tower at the school, filled with instruments for charting and divination (a secret foalhood obsession of hers), and a telescope that can reach the craggy surface of several planets. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend inordinate amounts of time there??

Luna is also beloved, in her own right, by her students; though her past and her sometimes aloof, internal personality have caused many of them to view her as less warm and approachable than Celestia. However, the most athletically-inclined students revel in her Magical Combat classes, and those with an eye for signs and an appreciation for the mysteries of outer space look forward to the hours spent in the Observatory with her. She is very kind, in general, and seems to have a better understanding of the current youth culture than her sister; she is known to get into in-depth conversations with a few of her students about whomever the month’s hottest Indie musician is, and is more than willing to share her favorite records with anyone who wants to listen.

Hehehe this one took forever but I always love drawing my favorite “princesses”… Do you think you’d enjoy learning magic from these ladies? I’m not very “athletically inclined”, but I still think I’d thoroughly love Magical Combat with Luna!
