Even with spell books everywhere, his home is actually quite organized. He has a lot of these crystal lamp decorations. Not only is it not a run down shack, but his front door is adorned with his theme of the sun. His glasses are not broken and he’s not wearing tacky clothing. This suggest he still has self respect and pride in whatever it is that he does in the Crystal Empire before he snuck in there or even before he became the crystaller.
 
Can’t say much about his mane and tail. I think its supposed to make him look like a wacky wizard kind of pony.

His home and hair are cluttered and unkempt though, so it doesn’t surprise me that he would wear a worn-out hat.
 
He’s a lot like Moondancer in that regard.

The hat looks like its supposed to match his cloak but the hat looks all ragged and patched up. On the show, his cloak was unusually opulent. The pin of his cloak alone that looks like his CM has a lot of impractical detail on it with the individual sun rays and the little protruding four pointed glimmer on the lower corner. It doesn’t look like a cloak with that design would match a hat that has two patched holes in it.

“Old and comfortable” for everyday use, “clean and formal” for official duties?

I like the hat with the patches on it and how it hides his face. He reminds me of Vivi from Final Fantasy IX. But on the show, it doesn’t look like he would wear a wizard hat that looks tattered and old like that. When you see him stand beside Cadence and Shining Armor in that episode where Thorax first appeared, he doesn’t really stand out. He literally looks like a royal court wizard.

And then Starlight appears and makes fun of him for being outside.
