Apparently he’s possessed by the Nightmare Forces, which was the thing that took Luna’s body that caused Nightmare Moon to happen. Same with Rarity in the comics.
 
I think the Nightmare Forces got retconned though. With the writers confirming Nightmare Moon is more of a split personality born from Luna bottling up her negative emotions rather than a “symbiote”.

Uh, no, that doesn’t look a bloody thing like Nightmare Moon. I sincerely think the Marvel Method was used here.
