Equestria Girls is on the same level as canon as the comics. In other words, basically not at all.
I’m still waiting for the inevitable FiM episode dealing with Celestia’s previous student before Twilight, who is not Sunset Shimmer. The writers can actually do this because they don’t have to take EG or the comics into account when writing new episodes (which has already been done before, see Equestria Games), and it’d be a huge blow to both Sunset fans and the EG series in general.
Really, would it kill them to at least put Sunset’s picture somewhere, even if only for a few seconds and not mentioning her by name? Or have Sunset visit Equestria in a future Equestria Girls movie / special? Both of those wouldn’t really affect the main series, and yet they seem keen on blotting pony Sunset out of existence (the main MLP/EG page has no images of pony Sunset whatsoever).
As far as the EqG series goes, Sunset hasn’t really been used in the story in a manner where she’s the student of anyone. Much less than Twilight anyhow.
Her high-school graduation, maybe. Just how long can they keep stretching out senior year?
And no, Sunset was never Twilight’s student. She was pawned off to be looked after by the human versions of her friends and basically forgotten about. Plus the “Twilight’s pupil” comments in season six of FiM make it pretty clear that Starlight is Twilight’s only student.
Ironically I think Sunset is a much better mentor towards Twilight’s human counterpart than Twilight is to Starlight.
The girls are in fifth grade is still missing so they graduate 6 years of the canterlot high because the secondary in the United States ends in the tenth grade To sunset still 6 years more in the human world and when she graduates if she decides to stay in the human world and go to college together with the girls or return to equestria

I doubt it, it’s only happened in a good series with such infrequently its a great rarity (pun intended).
For example in the 40 years of Star Wars EU, out of the countless great characters produced, only one has ever became canon:
Don’t keep your hopes up if I were you. There isn’t anything wrong with liking Sunset, its just don’t expect her to have any bearing in the actual show. That’s Starlight’s role, so if you don’t like her you just have to toughen up princess.
“Do not worry, I’am not going to kill you, I have…. other uses for you ahahahahahahaha!”

“Take my hand, Twilight. Let me show you there’s another way…”

Pray to god that she will be one day.

Poor Sunset… relegated to the non-canonical universe.
P.S: I am not a Starlight hater, its just that people just won’t get over the fact that Sunset is not canon and Starlight is…
