Here’s what I think the plot for this is: The Rainbooms go to Crystal Prep to shoot a music video and ask the Shadow Five for some help. And Twilight has some problems reconciling with her old classmates.

There were two EG novels with an original plot not based on any short or movie. Another one would not be totally unexpected.

Interestingly enough I found that another Equestria Girls book is due to be released in December. This one apparently is labeled as #9 of the series where as #8 is the one coming up in June. Could we be getting a 5th EQG movie after all?

Crystal Prep, the Crystal Empire, and Twilight’s Malibu Playset do share some similarities. Though, I hope it’s another stupid building made of crystal in the city built by the Power Rangers. ;3

Sure that cinch will get the power of midnight sparkle and the sirens regain their powers to sunset shimmer as a sci twilight and the rainbooms awaits a great fight of their lives

From my observations of various MLP production images with timestamps, all timestamps simply start with 1 instead of 0 for unknown reason. It could come from any three shorts, though it’s still quite likely it’s the first one.

I guess–but they can just tag it as an Alternate Path or whatever, or find a why to weave the new information into their story. It’s why I never set anything in stone in fanfics; just in case new information comes along. (Of course, I haven’t written anything in years; life got in the way. I suck at describing things anyway.)
 
Of course, there are a lot of people who disregard canon, ignore (or outright misrepresent/twist facts) the things that actually happen in the show, and still use the same jokes for the last seven years, so why would they adapt now?
