Pretty well, I think!

They give the characters the room they need to develop and grow, despite the short runtime and the single series. The main cast are school-age, but quite independent, so you get stories told through them that might be cast for either the CMCs or the mane 6 in G4.

The dating aspect is unique to Tales, but yeah. If you’re like me you end up pleading with Sweetheart to pay attention to the red flags. Brightlance is full of the adorkables however, and nearly rescues the element by itself.

Tales’s time limitations and one-song-per-episode format meant that it ended up with a lot of imagine slots and “I Am” songs to establish a character’s motivations and the primary tension in an episode. Way more so than G4, and they can be delightfully surreal moments too. Tales doesn’t skimp on developing characters through regular interactions, however.

Be prepared to enjoy it for what it is. For what it’s worth, I enjoyed it quite a bit - but then again I’m a sucker for slices of life.

The animation definitely has its ups and downs by today’s standards, as does the singing. But there’s moments of graceful movement and a handful of decent songs too. Be prepared to hate 2 out of 3 of the official mane cast ships.

Some of the characters have family situations that really make you feel for them, particularly if you’re prone to reading between the lines. It’s delivered in a very matter-of-fact way though. Patch is an orphan with (inconsistently?) hinted dyslexia? Melody’s mom is a single parent who has to work shifts to support her three kids? No biggie, their folks love them to bits and their friends help them out. There are even a number of moments of actual peril and plausibly deniable hidden magic in the world.

The more of these ‘g1’s slice-of-life show’ gifs I see, the more I become intrigued.
The first show had action-adventure and quests and extreme stakes,
and MLP FIM has these upon occasion too.

Dare I dive into the deep end and embrace a completely slice-of-life cartoon?

I checked, and Patch calls her “Mrs Bloom” at one point (while hiding the wrecked flowers for the ceremony!)

Clover’s surname probably is “Bloom”. The other families in the series seem to use fairly typical Anglo familial naming in the English-language original soundtrack and toylines! That includes the Sunbright family on Tropical Island though, and they share a very different and heavily Hawaiian-inspired culture.

Interesting counterpoint: when the bride and the groom exchange vows, they might be expected to use their full names. In their case it’s just “do you, Meadowlark, take Cheval…”.

(TIL that the word for the study of how individuals and groups are named is “anthroponymy” and this is delightful to me)
